ACADEMY NEWSUnfortunately, it's the time of year when some players have to be released from the Academy ahead of the Welsh Super Cup. Letters will be sent out to the affected players during the course of the week and the squads for the Welsh Super Cup will be announced at the beginning of next week. ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMY v SHREWSBURY TOWNUnder 14's - a disappointing outcome in a game which started well for the Under 14's. During the first half fine performances from Ryan Jones and Gruff Bryan at the centre of defence and battling performances in midfield kept Shrewsbury at bay until just before half time. With the score 1 - 0 at half time Aber suffered another blow when injury meant Gruff Bryan could not return for the second half. With another goal conceeded just after half time the Aber heads went down and the superior pace and physicality of the Shrewsbury boys overpowered the Aber side who eventually went down 6 -0. Under 16's - another very physical game and another injury blow. Aber were always under pressure but showed determined and resolute defending with Sion Clarke outstanding at the centre of defence. Unfortunately, goalkeeper James Shaw was forced off with a nasty finger injury and Andrew Davies had to take his place in goal. Almost immediately Shrewsbury took the lead when a cross in from the left was headed in at the far post. In the second half Aber remained under pressure but some determined twists and turns from Tom Bradshaw kept the Shrewsbury rearguard on their toes and even suggested the possibility of an equaliser albeit against the run of play. Late in the second half a superb chipped finish gave Shrewsbury their second and settled the match. So used to being on the front foot, the Under 16's were on the defensive throughout with the extra pace and physical strength of the Shrewsbury players proving the difference. David Griffiths scored a hattrick for Penglais with their fourth goal coming from Liam Button. The bragging rights are definitely with Aberaeron school Under 14's who won their final 2 - 0. The goals came in the first eight minutes from Henry Jones and Dylan Morgans. Congratulations to them on a fantastic achievement. LLANELLI ACADEMY v ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMYUNDER 16's - another good day at the office for the Under 16's with an impressive 6 - 1 victory. Alex O'Keefe helped himself to 4 of the Aber goals, with further goals from Tom Bradshaw and Kristian Jenkins. Under 14's - a much improved performance saw Aber contest a goalless first period before Aber took the lead in the second period through new boy Ryan Price. However, Llanelli levelled to leave the scores 1 - 1 going in to the third period. Aber again took the lead through Dale Williams but again Llanelli levelled soon after. Llanelli then found the winner to leave Aber disappointed. Under 12's - the Under 12's raced into a 3 - 0 lead in the first period with goals from Emlyn Lewis, Gareth Davies and Alex Samuel. Llanelli won the second period 2 -1 with the Aber goal coming from Iestyn Morgan - Jones. Aber made the game safe in the third period with another goal from Iestyn to win the match 5 - 2. ST. Day 1 A good coach journey down to Portsmouth with a stop at Abergavenny where we picked up our coach driver 'Rhys' and then another stop at the Leigh Delamere Services on the M4 near Chippenham. It was a windy day and the concern was whether the Hoverspedd ferry would sail or whether we would have to wait for an ordinary ferry delaying our arrival in Cherbourg. In the event, the Hoverspeed was withdrawn but luckily there was a ferry departing at the same time to the French Port of Caen which we decided to take, but would see us arrive at the Youth Hostel in St. Brieuc at 2.00 am french time rather than the 11/11.30 pm arrival we had planned. We were joined on the Ferry by the Bradshaw family and Conor Kenny's dad David. As it turned out the ordinary ferry crossing proved very enjoyable for the boys who had more freedom and more activities to interest them than they would have had on the Hoverspeed. We were given a lounge room with reclining seats which acted as a base camp. The highlight of the crossing was the karaoke entertainment, lapped up by the Under 12's, but who will ever forget Liam Buttons' rendition of 'Angels' and Eifion Jones' highly entertaining version of 'A Thousand Miles'. Rhys Wyn and I also made Michael Jackson's 'Billy Jean' our own with a truly astonishing performance! Arriving in Caen the weather was wet and windy and on the road to St. Brieuc we encountered some heavy snow falls so much so that there was concern as to whether we would be able to continue but the snow suddenly cleared and we were able to coninue on without difficulty. Day 2 Arriving in St. Brieuc we were met on the road by our contact and host 'Jean' waving a torch on the side of the road. Inevitably he was know as Jean le Torch throughout our stay. But a special mention for Jean who was a most obliging host helping us with our arrangements and liasing with the hostel and tournament officials. Many thanks Jean! We arrived at the hostel at 2.00 am and obviously it was straight to bed as the football was due to start at 9.00 am. The hostel accomodation was neatly set out in 4 seperate blocks around a central courtyard. Each block had 3 or 4 rooms each containing a single bed and a bunk bed so we were able to have supervision by the adults in each block. Each room also had a shower. Up for breakfast from 8.00 am we had a selection of french bread, cornflakes, jams, yoghurts, juices, milk and coffee. Most of the Under 12's were less than impressed with the french bread extracting the soft bread from inside the crust and that was the one complaint about the meal arrangements, they would have preferred toast in the morning! Breakfast was also the first shock for the players, this was a youth hostel and everyone was expected to clear up after themselves. This was made very clear by the 'no-nonsense' manageress who unfortunately couldn't speak a word of english and we couldn't speak a word of french! More details of the tournament emerged. It was a two day tournament, with the first day given over to an Under 12's seven-a-side tournament starting at 9.00 am. The tournament venue was only a short distance away from the hostel and the Under 12's divided into two randomly selected teams of 7 (Aberystwyth 1 and Aberystwyth 2) and departed in cars arranged by Jean and accompanied by Richard Lucas, Elfyn Jones and Dylan Roberts. The Tournament venue was a full sized pitch with a good surface and with the games taking place in each half of the pitch with 3/4 sized goals. There was also a third small pitch behind a small stand. There were also sweets, coffees and hot food stalls and a tournament director blasting out instructions over a microphone. The pitches were wet before play began and unfortunately this first day began with snow flurries followed by prolonged showers of heavy rain. Nevertheless the tournament got underway involving french teams drawn from an area up to 100km/60 miles from St. Brieuc. The play in the morning involved groups of four teams playing each other on a round-robin basis to determine the qualifiers for the knock out stage of the competition due to start in the late afternoon. The Aberystwyth teams performed very well winning all their group games apart from one drawn game and were set to qualify for the later stages. Picnic lunches were provided by the hostel consisting of french bread, plastic covered trays containing salad items and chicken to provide a fill for the bread. There were also muffins, crisps and small individually wrapped cheeses. Bottled water was also provided. The waiting between games meant that the players became cold and shivery because of the weather and their wet kits. Meanwhile back at the hostel 11 a-side friendly matches had been arranged for the Under 14's and Under 16's on a full size pich at the hostel. Again the pitch had a good surface, there were changing rooms and floodlights. Indeed it was interesting to note that there were a number of well maintained floodlit pitches dotted around whereas here only a minority of clubs have such facilities. Unfortunately my digital camera decided that it didn't like me anymore and refused to work. But in due course there will be some photographs of the Under 12's tournament from Dylan Roberts. The friendly games were won easily by the Aberystwyth sides and I've been asked to mention a stunning 30 yard goal from Chris Wylde and Sion Clarke's first ever goal for the Academy celebrated as if it had just won a final! Just before the finish of the Under 16 game the heavens opened with a prolonged torrential downpour which unfortunately led to the abandonement of the Under 12 tournament at around 2/2.30 pm. Something that would have to be borne in mind for a future trip is that there was no plan B. Because the friendly matches for the Under 14's and Under 16's had finished in the early afternoonn Jean kindly offered to act as guide on a small excursion to St. Brieuc. At this time we expected the Under 12's to still be involved in their tournament throughout the afternoon but in the event the excursion was leaving just as the Under 12's were returning to the hostel needing to shower and change so they felt a little 'left out' as the excursion departed but had the promise that a further excursion would be arranged for them the next day. St. Brieuc derives its name from the Welsh based monk 'Brioc' who arrived in the region from Ceredigion in the 6th Century. The town is set out on two sides of a deep valley so there are numerous huge bridges connecting the two sides. We travelled down one side of the valley to the bay area passing the marina at the bottom of the valley and then walked a short distance to the promenade of a very attractive sandy bay where we spent ten minutes or so taking in the view before returning to the hostel. We could only spend a short time outside the coach because of the poor weather and as it was Easter all the shops and other commercial activities were closed. Back to the hostel the players were able to play table tennis and there was a games room where they could 'hang out' and play pool. The wet playing kits were distributed over the radiators in the rooms to dry out for the next day's play. The evening meal was at 7.30 when we were served fish with rice and dessert and very nice it was too. Myself, Dylan Roberts, Richard Lucas and Elfyn Jones went to a reception in the town where the St. Brieuc twinning committee was greeting a significant delegation from Alsdorf, Germany. We were hoping for the opportunity to enjoy 'a little drink' but manfully endured a dry occasion with speech after speech in french and german; but we shook a lot of hands! On the way back we were able to stop at a supermarket and buy some 'provisions' which enabled the adult members of the group to entertain themselves into the early hours. Thankfully the neat arrangement of the accomodation blocks allowed us to maintain supervision whilst also enjoying a few bottled beers and wine. Day 3 More disappointment for the Under 12's on day 3. The friendly on the full sized pitch was called off because of a combination of continuing poor weather and the fact that the pitch at the hostel had become something of a quagmire following the two full games played on it the day before. The weather was better on Day 3, but heavy showers had given way to lighter drizzly showers keeping the pitches very wet. The tournament venue pitches were still playable apart from the smaller third pitch which had become a mud pond. In fairness to our hosts they tried to involve the Under 12's in the Under 14 tournament but that was dependent on one of the french local teams failing to attend and there was some prospect that would occur. So we all travelled to the tournament for a 9.00 am start. This was a six a-side tournament which was a relief as the Under 16's only had enough players for two teams of six. The Aberystwyth sides began performing very well and producing admiring remarks from local french supporters. The Under 12's were hoping their first game would be at 10.30 am but at 10.15 am the local french side they would replace turned up and so the tournament organisers could no longer include the Under 12's and couldn't expand the tournament to accomodate them because of a strict timetable with the third pitch being unavailable for use. So the Under 12's stayed watching the Under 14's and Under 16's until midday before returning to the hostel. Thankfully it was discovered that a bowling alley in the town was opening for business at 2.00 pm when just about everywhere else was still closed. The Under 12's were taken by coach to the bowling alley where they were able to play bowls and pool. The Under 14's and Under 16's continued with their tournament enjoying the six a-side format and performing very well. The four teams each qualified for the later stages of the competition where the games became increasingly tough as the quality of the opposition improved and tiredness began to take it's toll. The players were clearly enjoying themselves and a special mention for Chris Wylde who I thought typified the spirit amongst the players by volunteering to play in goal for one of the teams and 'playing to the gallery' of the other watching Aber players by joining in the attacks whenever he could. All the Aber teams made the semi finals where the play became rather 'feisty' at times. Indeed in one of the Under 14's games against the German Alsdorf team a tackle by one of the Aber players which was a bit 'agricultural' produced a storm of sustained protest by the Germans and almost an international incident following a wild and threatening over reaction by one of the German coaches! Thankfully, Jean was on hand to help sort out the language difficulties but from that point on the Aberystwyth sides had to endure some rather unsavoury and negative tactics employed against them. The play continued to 7.00 pm in the evening with last game of the day being the Under 16's final between one of the Aberystwyth teams and a french side which had to be decided by penalties with Aberystwyth losing out in the penalty competition. The Aberystwyth Under 16 sides finished second and third respectively. The Under 14 sides finished fourth with no play off for third and fourth being played. Back to the hostel where spaghetti bolognaise was the main dish with a chocolate mouse for dessert. There followed presentations at the hostel where gifts were exchanged and the Under 16's recieved their trophies for their second and third places. The adults enjoyed another social evening talking to the early hours with the aid of some nice wines! Day 4 The journey home began with an early breakfast, then off on the coach to St. Malo. A beautiful day and a very pleasant cruise through the Channel Islands and back to Portsmouth before the coach journey home. Throughout the trip the behaviour of the players was a credit to themselves and the Academy. They responded well to all instructions from the adults and were a pleasure to be with. A special word of thanks to the adult members of the party who supervised supported and encouraged throughout as well as being wonderful companions. We had a great time and although the lack of football for the Under 12's was a disappointment that was as a result of circumstances beyond our control and we hope that overall this was an enjoyable trip for all the players. A big thankyou to you all! Photos to follow 21.03.08 - St Brieuc - UPDATEFor any parents travelling independently, the under 12's will be involved in games starting at 9.00 am a few minutes away from the hostel so might I suggest you be at the hostel for 8.30 am on Sunday to find out more information. NEWI dominated the first third racing into a 0 - 3 lead, but in the second period Aber turned the tables and brought the scores back level with 2 goals from Harry Grasham and one from Rhydian Davies. In the third period NEWI secured the win with two further goals. Under 14's - this was a very evenly contested game which on balance Aber deseved to win. A Kyle Smith header put Aber ahead but some resolute defending was needed to keep the lead. Under 16's - The Under 16's will be kicking themselves for throwing away a 3 -1 lead. Aber looked comfortable with their lead but NEWI came back strongly helped by a needless penalty and an under hit back pass. All in all a good well contested game. 15.02.08 - UPDATEAll games definitely on this Sunday, see amended squad lists below. Unfortunately, the Shrewsbury games are postponed once more as we were double booked on the pitches at Lilleshall. We are awaiting a new date. We will announce the squads as soon as possible so that selected players can inform their Junior League clubs of their non-availability as soon as possible. 01.02.08 - SUNDAY MATCHES v AIRBUS OFFUnfortunately the forecast for Sunday is persistent rain and as the pitches at Blaendolau are already very wet there is a real risk that if the forecast rain comes the matches would be called off that day. That would be most unfair to Airbus who have a long way to travel so to avoid that the decision was taken today in conjunction with the headgroundsman at Blaendolau to call off the games. 27.01.08ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMY v AIRBUS ACADEMY - SUNDAY 3RD FEBRUARYThe first game since the Christmas break and we appreciate that everyone wants to play but of course that's not possible. Emlyn Lewis had put Aber ahead before Port Talbot equalised. Aber had a great chance to take the lead from the penalty spot but Iestyn Morgan Jones' well struck effort bounced off the post and across the goal. In the last minute Jamie Owen scored to give the Under 12's their win. Under 14's - A superb penalty save and a cracking strike from a free kick by Dylan Morgans gave Aber a 1 - 0 lead at the end of the first period. The same player had the chance to extend the lead on a couple of occeassions but found the Talbot Keeper in good form. Aber had to withstand a lot of pressure in the second and third periods and nearly held out when with the last kick of the game Port Talbot equalised. Under 16's - The Under 16's had an outstanding display from Tom Bradshaw to thank for their 4 - 2 victory. Not only did he score two goals, but his general game was full of quality. Three Academy players are visiting Birmingham City for trials next week. Jonathan Evans, Kristian Jenkins and Sion Clarke have each been invited to Birmingham on Wednesday to train for the rest of the week prior to a match against Reading on Saturday. Sion Clarke has been outstanding in recent Academy and Schools games and it's no suprise that he is beginning to interest professional clubs. Good luck! Jonathan and Kristian continued their progress with Welsh Schools at a match in Newtown last Wednesday and both scored in a 2 - 2 draw. Former Academy player Gwion Edwards was also involved. * NO ACADEMY GAMES THIS WEEK END* The Head Groundsman at Blaendolau has cancelled all games this weekend due to waterlogged pitches. Whilst this is a disappointment, this is the first set of Academy games lost to the weather, this season. We will try to rearrange the games with Vale of Glamorgan for next year. I understand that there is a 1993 Schools game in Aberdare on Saturday and any player requiring further information should contact Lee Jenkins. I still do not have any more detail of the 1994 schools game scheduled for Tuesday. PHYSIOTHERAPY ATFC First Team physiotherapist Megan Edwards has kindly agreed to become the official physiotherapist for Academy players. She's very good apparently! She will see players on Wednesday nights by prior appointment on Wednesday evening from 6.30 pm at Aberystwyth Town Football Club. Bookings must be made on the Monday or Tuesday prior through Academy Director Martyn Griffiths on 07967156780. The cost is £15.00 per 40 minutes. Unfortunately, because of the expense to the Academy of the increased number of games we are unable to contribute to the cost of physiotherapy sessions. WEB - SITE This weekend there will be an attempt to revamp the web-site. If it fails, blame Martyn! 28.11.07 1994 Schools - There is a match for the 1994 Schools team at Ammanford on Tuesday evening. At present I do not have anymore details but the squad will be: - Andrew Mackay; Oliver Hughes; Adam Carvell; Eifion Jones; Sean Button; Kyle Smith; Gruff Bryan; Samba Ndong; Stewart Hoban; David Pritchard; Bryn Oliver; Justin Quinn; Conner Berner; Joshua Ferreira; The 1994's have a real chance to qualify so players should make every possible effort to attend. I will post further details as I recieve them. We will be told Friday afternoon if the games are taking place. 28.11.07 - URGENT MESSAGE NO TRAINING TONIGHT - ASTROTURF CLOSED Unfortunately we were informed only this morning that the Centre would be closed tonight 24.11.07 Ceredigion Schools (1993) v Afan Nedd After training last week with the Welsh Under 16 squad, Jonathan Evans got back to business scoring twice against Afan Nedd in a 3 - 2 victory. Rhys Wyn also found the net for Ceredigion. Ceredigion Schools (1995) v Afan Nedd Afan Nedd raced into a two goal lead before Rhydian Davies pulled one back for Ceredigion to leave the score 1 -2 at half time. Afan Nedd added two further goals in the second half to win the match 1 - 4. Despite the scoreline, Ceredigion competed very well and both teams should be congratulated for producing a very good game in atrocious weather conditions. 20.11.07 Ceredigion Schools 1993 v Afan Nedd This match is confirmed for this Saturday (24th) at Blaendolau with a kick off time of 11.30 am see below for news of Ceredigion Schools 1995 fixture. Neath/Swansea Academy v Aber Academy These games are NOT taking place this Sunday. For some reason Neath/Swansea believed these fixtures were arranged for 23rd December and cannot now rearrange the fixtures with us this Sunday. There are however Schools Games. Ceredigion Schools 1995 have a "top of the table" clash against Afan Nedd at Blaendolau on Saturday 24th November at home at Blaendolau. The squad is the same that played last weekend in Bridgend with the addition of Jacob Billingsley; Christy Gale and Harry Grasham. Kick off is 11.00 am and players should be at Blaendolau for 10.15 am. Ceredigion Schools (1992) have an away game at Bridgend but I donot have any further detail. It is hoped that a1993 Schools game will be arranged also at Blaendoalu again against Afan Nedd. More detail when I have it. 18.11.07 Newtown Academy v Aberystwyth Academy There was definitely a wintry feel to the weather at Newtown today but good results for the Academy squads. The Under 12's won 6 -2. They were 3 - 1 up after the first period with goals from Iestyn Morgan Jones (2) and Owain Taylor. In the second period William Price netted twice and trialist Sion Jones added the sixth in the final period. The Under 14's found themselves a goal down at half time, but livened up after a spectacular strike from Dylan Morgans opened the second half scoring for Aber. Stewart Hoban put Aber ahead and a second for Dylan Morgans gave the Under 14's a comfortable 3 - 1 win. Tom Bradshaw was the star of the Under 16's 4 - 0 win scoring a hatrick. Rhys Wyn was the other Aber scorer. Ceredigion Schools (1995) had a cracking win against Bridgend Schools running out 5 - 1 winners. Ryan Williams and Jamie Owen did the damage with two goals each and there was a goal for Rhydian Davies aswell. With Aberystwyth Town first team winning 3 - 0 at home, it's been a good day! BREAKING NEWS Under 16 Academy Player Jonathan Evans (1993) has been selected in the Welsh Squad of 20 for the Under 16 victory shield international between Wales and Northern Ireland which takes place next Friday evening at Park Avenue Aberystwyth. This is a huge honour for Jonathan who is still an Under 15 player with another year to go at Under 16 level. Congratulations Jonathan and coach Lee Jenkins. I suppose it's too much to expect that Jonathan scores the winner on his home ground - but you never know. Let's see a huge turnout from the Academy to support Wales!! Pembrokeshire Schools 1993 v Ceredigion Schools 1993 A stunning 6 - 1 victory for Ceredigion over Pembrokeshire last night at Haverfordwest. St. Brieuc Thanks to all players and parents who have expressed interest in travelling to St. Brieuc, the players chosen to travel are as follows: - Conor Kenny; Iolo Ap Dafydd; Matthew Lucas; Nathan Pemberthy; Stephen Williams; William Price; Teifion Davies; Iestyn Morgan - Jones; Iwan Jones; Tomos Roberts; Owain Taylor; Gareth Davies; Rhydian Davies; Jamie Owen; Andrew Mackay; Christopher Wylde; Oliver Hughes; Eifion Jones; Sean Button; Kyle Smith; Jacob Billingsley; Gruff Bryan; Samba Ndong; Ryan Jones; Stewart Hoban; Conner Berner; Hywel Evans; Christy Gale; Josh Hartrick; Rory Rebbeck; Matthew Clarke; Sion Clarke; Liam Button; Evan Lewis; Tom Bradshaw; Jonathan Evans; Kristian Jenkins; Dylan Morgans; Gwion Ap Dafydd; Alex O'Keefe; Andrew Davies. We are missing an Under 16 Goalkeeper, but we're working on it. The difficulty was in respect of the Under 14 group. By far the greater positive response was from the Academy Group and so a team was selected from that group supplemented by an extra defender, midfield player and striker. All selected players must pay £37.50 by next Wednesday training session. I am setting up a seperate account from the Academy account at my firm, so any cheques should be made payable to "Morris & Bates". The Parents travelling will be Mr Morgan - Jones; Mr Clarke and Mr Rebbeck (French Speaker - or so he says!) Pencoed College is approximately half way between Cardiff and Swansea, close to the town of Bridgend and is only a mile or so from the motorway. To find the college by road exit the M4 Motorway at junction 35, take the A473 in a North Easterly direction from the M4 and proceed straight across the first roundabout (Sony's to the right) and turn right, into the college at the next roundabout. Selected players should be at Pencoed College for 12.15 pm. Details of the squad when I recieve them. Aberystwyth Academy v Llanelli Academy Under 12's - Having been a goal down in the first period the Under 12's recovered to record a 4 -1 victory. William Price brought the scores level in the second period before Aber took the game away from Llanelli with 4 goals in the final period scored by Harry Grasham; Stephen Williams and 2 from Iestyn Morgan - Jones Under 14's - A tough afternoon for the Under 14's Development squad playing an older Llanelli team. Nevertheless, the Aber boys competed well with some good individual performances. However, Llanelli were too strong and ran out 7 - 1 winners, the Aber goal coming from Jacob Billingsley. Under 16's - Aber were made to work hard for what in the end was a comfortable win. Goals from Jonathan Evans (2); Rory Rebbeck; Evan Lewis and Josh Hatrick gave Aber a 5 - 2 victory. Ceredigion Schools 1993 v Pembrokeshire Schools 1993 This game will be played in Haverfordwest this Friday at the Haverfordwest Liesure Centre Astroturf at the Thomas Picton School. The kick off is 6.30 pm and Players should be at the Venue for 5.45 pm or 6.00 pm at the latest. The selected squad is: James Shaw; Henry Jones; Dylan Bailey; Sion Clarke; Rees Davies; Dylan Morgans; Kristian Jenkins; Rees Watson-Ellis; Jonathan Evans; Gwion Edwards; Dylan Freeman; Steffan Freeman Ceredigion Schools 1994 v Swansea Schools 1994 Another performance full of promise for the 1994's and so nearly a result against one of the strongest teams in the competition. But they will be upset with themselves for allowing Swansea to over come the 2 - 0 lead Ceredigion had established with a goal from Dale Williams and a penalty converted by Sean Button. Swansea quickly recovered to 2 -2 and the teams remained locked at 2 - 2 for the rest of the half until the last five minutes when Swansea scored their winner. *URGENT/ IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR ALL PLAYERS/PARENTS* We have the opportunity to play in a small tournament being held in St. Brieuc, Brittany (France) during Easter. As you may know the towns of Aberystwyth and St. Brieuc are twinned and St. Brieuc is also twinned with Alsdorf (Germany) who are also attending the tournament. So, it's a chance of European Football. The cost is £150.00 per person and this covers travelling on a 49 seater coach, crossing the channel by Ferry, coach travel in France and return, accommodation at a Youth Hostel for 3 nights, including breakfast, (picnin lunch to take to games venue, and evening meal. It allows for 3 squads at Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 consisting of 14 players and space for 7 adults. The basic itinerary will be; 22nd March 2008 Aberystwyth to Portsmouth Hoverspeed Ferry to Cherbourg - 3.45 pm Arrive Cherbourg 7.30 pm Arrive St. Brieuc - 9.30 pm/10.00pm Overnight Stay at Youth Hostel 23rd March 2008 - Breakfast (Picnic Lunch) Full day of Football Evening meal Overnight Stay at Youth Hostel 24th March 2008 - Breakfast (Picnic Lunch) Full day of Football Evening meal Overnight stay at Youth Hostel 25th March 2008 Depart early to catch ordinary ferry departing St. Malo - 10.30 am Arrive Portsmouth - 6.30 pm Return Travel to Aberystwyth The Youth Hostel known as Les Villages can be viewed following this link: http://www.fuaj.org/eng/hostels/aj_fiche.php?aj_id=32 Copy and paste the link or type it into your browser. The urgency is that the prices I have negotiated can only be held until 29th November. Therefore, I need firm committment Yes or No by Wednesday 14th November for every player. If any age group is oversubscribed I will meet with the coaches to decide a fair way of determining the squad. I'm sorry to be harsh, but any player who cannot give a firm answer by Wednesday, cannot be included. Parents can e - mail me or telephone me on 01970 612720 or speak to me at training on Wednesday. The relevant questions are; Does your son wish to be included? Does a parent wish to travel aswell? (Does parent speak French?) Is your son's inclusion dependent on parent inclusion? So that parents can make an informed choice, it is confirmed that parents pay the same price as the child. 25% of the cost must be paid by November 21st (£37.50). Remember that for boys at Under 12 not yet admitted to the Academy, there will be next terms payment for the Academy due of £70.00 inclusive of kit and the cost of participating in the Welsh Super Cup in the Summer is usually around £30.00 per person. So for Under 12's remember there is likely to be another £100.00 to pay next year even if your child does not go to St. Brieuc. Players already admitted to the Academy have a further £75.00 to pay next year (Academy term - £45.00 and Welsh Super Cup - £30.00). I cannot provide any discount for two boys travelling from same family. We will seek to reduce the cost per person by holding a Raffle and probably a duck race, and perhaps a do in the football club. You now know as much as I do! Look forward to hearing from all asap. 07.11.07 A proud night for the Academy as three boys from Aberystwyth Academy, Jonathan Evans, Kristian Jenkins and Gwion Edwards played tonight in the North v South Welsh Schools Association match which ended in a 1 - 1 draw. The Aber goal came from Iolo Ap Dafydd The Under 14's also had a difficult time conceeding four before Samba Ndong and Ryan Jones halved the difference. The Under 16's provided the only win for the Academy running out 2 - 1 winners in a very close encounter. Tom Bradshaw and Jonathan Evans got the Aber goals and Jonathan Hartnell saved a penalty! Cardiff Schools 3, Ceredigion Schools 2 (1994's) So nearly a tremendous result for the 1994's who were denied a draw by a last minute winner for Cardiff. Ceredigion took the lead early on through Kyle Smith and then lost the lead as Cardiff replied with two goals. Sean Button then brought the scores level before Cardiff secured a win in the last minute. There was high praise for the performance and the committment shown by the players and parents making such a long trip. Under 12's The Under 12's enjoyed a good game on the Haverfordwest first team pitch. Haverfordwest took an early lead only for Rhydian Davies to reply immediately with a well taken goal. Haverfordwest took the lead again before good work by Rhydian Davies forced an own goal equaliser. Just before the end of the first period Haverfordwest went ahead again. The second period was evenly contested with both teams adding a goal, Aber's from Rhydian Davies again. In the third period, Aber pressed for an equaliser, but late on Haverfordwest grabbed another to take the game 5 - 3 Under 14's The Under 14's overwhelmed Haverfordwest with an 8 - 1 victory. I don't have details of all the scorers but Chris Wylde (2); Ryan Jones; Dylan Morgans and Dale Williams were among the scorers. Under 12's The Under 12 trialists performed very well in their match scoring eight goals and conceding only two. Amongst the Aber scorers were Josh Lewis (2); Rhydian Davies; Liam Fenge; Mikey Glover and Owain Taylor. Under 14's The Under 14 Development squad were involved in a highly entertaining and evenly contested match. Twice Aber went behind but they kept their composure and shape and put together some good passing moves. Goals from Dale Williams and Hywel Evans restored parity and then Aber went ahead with a superb 25 yard strike from Dewi Evans. But Aber were unable to hold out for the win as Afan Lido grabbed a late and well deserved equaliser. Under 16's Although a niggly game throughout, Aber were two up at half time with goals from Josh Hartrick and Alex O'Keefe. A superb long range effort from Gwion Ap Dafydd extended the lead in the second half. However, tempers boiled over and the match had to be brought to an end early by the referee. 28.09.2007 Just a reminder that the games against Afan Lido kick off at 12 noon on Sunday, so players should be at Baendolau around 11.00 am. NEW FIXTURE ANNOUNCEMENT A new fixture has been added to our fixture list. We will be entertaining Bangor City Academy on Sunday 4th November. However, we will be looking in to the possibility of holding the games at Tywyn, so watch this space! 24.09.07 The squads for the Afan Lido games will be: - Under 12 - Conor Kenny; Ronan Griffiths; Josh Lewis; Liam Fenge; Joshua Rankin; Teifion Davies; Huw Davies; Mikey Glover; Iwan Jones; Richard Jenkins; Owain Taylor; Gareth Davies; Rhydian Jenkins; Nathan Pemberthy; Stephen Williams and Philip Jones Under 14 - Hefin Hopkins; Dewi Evans; Morgan Roberts-Young; David Pritchard; Bryn Oliver; Dale Williams; Coner Berner; Jack Evans; Chris Alldritt; Dylan Davies; Sion Jones; David Pugh-Davies; Ryan Thomas; Hywel Evans; Neil Davies; Anthony Evans; Stewart Hoban. Under 16 - All Under 16's should attend 23.09.07 Aberystwyth Academy v Neath/Swansea Neath/Swansea were too strong for the Academy today. Indeed it was the relative strength and fitness of the South Walians that proved too much for Aber. At Under 12 the first period was evenly contested with a very well taken goal by Stephen Williams bringing the scores level after the Swansea opener. During the second period Swansea played a more consistent passing game and began to pull away from Aber with two further goals. Swansea added another two in the final period to run out 5 - 1 winners. A very similar story with the Under 14's who held Swansea for most of the first period. When Swansea did open the scoring Chris Wylde rifled home an equaliser, before Swansea quickly took the lead again. As the game continued Aber created a number of chances but the extra strength and fitness of the Swansea players began to tell as they again ran out 5 - 1 winners. No goals for Aber at Under 16 level. Aber had chances early on but Swansea took the lead late in the first half. Josh Hartrick nearly equalised but his effort was cleared off the line. Swansea pulled away with two more golas in the second half. Another tough set of matches next Sunday when Afan Lido are the visitors. 17.09.07 Aberystwyth Academy v Neath/Swansea The games are confirmed with a 12 noon kick off at Blaendolau. Players should arrive by 11.00 am. Players not selected will be in the squad to play Afan Lido. The U14 squad will be: Dafydd Rees; Andrew Mackay; Chris Wylde; Oliver Hughes; Gruff Bryan; Ryan Jones; Adam Carvell; Eifion Jones; Carwyn Earey; Conner Berner; Dale Williams; Justin Quinn; Samba Ndong; Sean Button; Kyle Smith; Ryan Williams; Jamie Owen and Jacob Billingsley The Development Squad players will play against Afan Lido All Under 16 players should attend 11.09.07 1993 Fixture The kick off time for the 1993 game in Carno this Sunday has been moved to 2.30 pm. Academy players Progress From the Under 16's Jonathan Evans and Kristian Jenkins have both been for trials with Derby County whilst Gwion Edwards is interesting Swansea and played last Sunday for their centre of excellence. Christy Gale and Liam James also continue to interest Swansea and Liam is presently undergoing a six week trial with the centre of excellence. Young Alex Samuel is another Academy player interesting Swansea. Eifion Jones has attended a South Wales regional squad session and hopefully more Academy players will progress in Welsh Schools football this season. 10.09.07 Training Reminder Just a reminder that Training for all groups commences this Wednesday at the University Astro turf on the Penglais Campus. The Under 12's and the U14 Development squad train at 6.30 pm whilst the Under 14 Academy and U16 Academy squads train at 8.00 pm. New fixtures added Two new fixtures have been added to the fixture programme. We will be visiting Newtown Academy on Sunday 18th November with a 12 noon kick off. We may well travel to this fixture by cars to save the cost of a coach so please give that some thought. Our last game of this year will be against Shrewsbury Town on 16th December. It has yet to be decided whether this will be home or away. 1993 Trials match Next Sunday there is a match in Carno (on the road between Caersws and Machynlleth) against Powys. Aber Academy U16 1993's are invited to play as Ceredigion and the successful trialists will then play as Mid Wales against South Wales. The kick off in Carno is at 11.00 am. This is not an Academy fixture, so there will not be a coach provided. Please contact coach Lee Jenkins to confirm your availability. 09.09.07 Llanelli Academy v Aber Academy Delays caused by a serious road accident on the M4 caused a number of players travelling direct to arrive late with the games already underway. Nevertheless the Academy enjoyed a good afternoon in Llanelli. Llanelli U12 1, Aberystwyth U12 2 The Under 12 trialists performed well against Llanelli. The first period was very even but during the second period goals from Rhydian Davies and Gareth Davies gave Aber a two goal lead. In the final period Llanelli pulled a goal back but Aber held on for the win. Llanelli U14 0, Aberystwyth U14 3 A solid defensive display from Gruff Bryan and Ryan Jones in the centre of defence was the platform for an encouraging victory by the Under 14's. Again the first period was goalless but in the second period Jacob Billingsley put Aber ahead. Further goals from Gruff Bryan and a solo effort from Sean Button sealed the win for Aber. Llanelli U16 2, Aberystwyth U16 3 A Josh Hartrick hatrick gave the Under 16's victory in a close fought contest. Hartrick struck in the first period to give Aber the lead and added a second soon after the start of the second period. Llanelli came back with a goal before Hartrick struck again to give Aber a 3 - 1 lead at the end of the second period. Llanelli pulled another one back in the third period but Aber held out for the win. 04.09.07 Llanelli Update Under 12's - The squad for Llanelli will be: - James Garner; Conor Kenny; Ronan Griffiths; Josh Lewis; Liam Fenge; Kyle Noble; Huw Davies; Gareth Davies; Rhydian Davies; Harry Grasham; Jake Williams; Benjamin Robson; Iestyn Morgan-Jones; Tomos Roberts and Richard Jenkins. The Under 16's may well find the Academy fixtures tough going this season as the majority of players are Under 15 so a tough test can be expected against Llanelli next Sunday. The Under 12's trials match was very worthwhile with a number of promising performances. There are still a number of players to see and this is reflected in the squad selection for Llanelli. Whereas we expanded to five squads for the Super Cup we now revert to three squads at Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16. The guidelines for the squads are as follows: - Under 12 - secondary school players born in 1996. Letters inviting new 1996 players are being sent out to players recommended, though we have yet to recieve a list of recommended players from the South Ceredigion Junior League. It is also possible to include 1995 players born between 1.09.95 and 31.12.95 where necessary. The coaches have decided that 1995 players born between those dates will be included in the Under 12 squad as the jump to Under 14 football for players who were in primary school last season would be too much to expect. The position will be reviewed again in December. Under 14 - players born in 1995 and 1994. This group has given us the greatest problem for next season. Following the Super Cup we have a list of over 40 players who would qualify for the Under 14 Academy. Ordinarily, this squad would have to be reduced to 18 or so and a large number of players released. The coaches recognise that at this age players are developing at significantly different rates both physically and technically. This is compounded by a two year age band at this level. Whilst it is still necessary to release some players, the coaches have decided that there will be two squads at Under 14, an Academy squad and a Development squad. Again it is possible where necessary to include players born between 1.9.93 and 31.12.93. Letters are in the process of being prepared to inform Under 14 players of these changes. Under 16 - players born in 1993 and 1992. Again some players have to be released. Also the Under 16 group can accommodate players born between 1.9.91 and 31.12.91. However, the coaches have decided that players turning 16 in September or October 2007 should train with the Aberystwyth Town adult squads until they are able to sign to play adult football. Players turning 16 in November or December will be invited to the Academy and will play in Academy games until they turn 16 and can be included if nesceesary thereafter. Letters to Under 16 players will be sent out shortly. Keep an eye on the web-site for possible friendlies. Presently, we may be visiting Airbus Academy on Saturday 18th August; TNS have expressed interest in friendlies at Blaendolau on Sunday 26th August and this would be a Devlopment Squad game for the Under 14's; and Shrewsbury Junior Colts have expressed interest in a friendly on Sunday 2nd September. They wish to bring an Under 15 side and would therefore wish to play a predominantly 1993 born Aber Under 16 side. Shrewsbury are also considering whether they can bring Under 12 and Under 14 sides. |
