ALEX SAVES THE DAY AS UNDER 16 ACADEMY PLAYERS FEATURE IN WELSH CUP DRAMAUnder 16 Academy players Alex Samuel and Rhydian Davies both featured in Aberystwyth Town's dramatic Welsh Cup win over Llandudno Town FC at Park Avenue on Saturday. It was always going to be a difficult day for the first team and they were 0 - 1 down when in the second half Alex and and Rhydian entered the fray and it was Alex who saved the day with an equalising goal that sent the tie in to extra time and then penalties. Aber won the penalty shoot out to send them in to the quarter finals. Well done both of you - training Wednesday!! CEREDIGION SCHOOLS v AFAN NEDD SCHOOLSUnder 12 - The performance was better than the result 2 - 6 suggests particularly in the first half. Facing a physically stronger Afan Nedd side Ceredigion matched their opponents scoring two goals through Jo Jones and Iolo Thomas and went in at half time just 3 - 2 down. In the second half Afan Nedd took control and ran away with it scoring another three goals without reply. Under 14 - a very good performance away from home and despite the 0 - 2 scoreline, Ceredigion were always in this game and could have taken something from it. 1 - 0 for a long period, Ceredigion pressed hard for an equaliser but then conceded a late second goal. So, 2 - 0 to Afan Nedd but another encouraging performance from Ceredigion. U12 match v South Ceredigion is OFF - pitches waterlogged at BlaendolauUnder 12 + Under 14 schools games are onThe pitches in Neath were playable today and they expect the pitches to remain playable tomorrow so the games are on. U15 RCT SCHOOLS 4, U15 Ceredigion Schools 2Due to a late pull out Ceredigion had to travel without a goalkeeper and with Jamie Butler playing for Swansea the Under 15's faced a tough task. The game was dominated by the wind which was in the favour of RCT in the first half. Scoring two very good goals and Ceredigion letting in one sloppy goal, RCT had a 3 - 0 halftime advantage. With the wind at their backs Credigion managed to score twice at at the end a respectable scoreline of 4 - 2 despite the defeat. Would the Under 13's Ceredigion Schools note that there is a very important weekend of 14th and 15th January when there are two home games on the bounce. First Newport Schools followed on Sunday against Pembrokeshire Schools. Could be a crucial weekend so please please ensure your availability for both games. SATURDAY + SUNDAY PROGRAMMENo matches this weekend but FUTSAL (indoor 5-a-side with a special ball) starts on Sunday in the Sports Cage. The Under 12's and U13's to attend at 9.00 am until 10.30 am and the Under 14's and Under 16's to attend 10.30 am to 12 noon. SUNDAY RESULTSThe huge shock and sadness of the death of Gary Speed overshadowed the day but for the record the results were; Under 12: Aberystwyth 3, Haverfordwest 3 Under 14: Aberystwyth 6, Haverfordwest 1 Under 15: Ceredigion Schools 2, Bridgend Schools 3 SUNDAY GAMES ARE ONGOOD DAY FOR CEREDIGION SCHOOLSA good day was nearly a fantastic day as the Under 14 Ceredigion squad lost narrowly to Swansea schools 2 - 1. The same team that suffered a 10 - 1 defeat away at RCT produced a superb defensive performance full of determination and grit and almost produced a huge upset. Swansea had a lot of quality and pace in their team and throughout the match must have had at least 80% of the possession but Ceredigion set out to disrupt and defend and when Swansea had failed to score in the first 15 minutes Ceredigion began to warm to their defensive task. Time and again the Swansea attacks broke down around the Ceredigion penalty area. Ryan Jenkins and Ethan Kent were disrupting the attacks down the flanks; Ashley Butler and Jake Jones battled the Swansea midfield. and the central defensive pairing of Aaron McCarthy and Gwion Pugh Jones were outstanding and ably supported by full backs Rhys Stevens and Matthew Shaw. Liam Jaques and Dafydd Carruthers made the best of the little possession that came to the forwards and one superb jinking run from Jaques nearly produced a goal. Late in the first half a defensive mix up between the Swansea centre half and goalkeeper gave an opportunity for Jaques and he made no mistake to give Ceredigion a most unexpected but very welcome first half lead. The second half started with much the same pattern but it took a penalty award mid way through the second half for Swansea to register their first goal. With time ticking away Ceredigion suffered a cruel blow when a Swansea free kick took a big deflection to leave Keeper Isaac Williamson stranded and Ceredigion defeated. All the players played well and hopefully the squad can gain some much needed confidence from this performance. Well done. Ceredigion Under 13's were away against Bridgend Schools and continuing their winning ways with an impressive 5 - 1 victory. There were two goals from captain Matthew Jones (Swansea City) and further goals from Dion Phillips and Mael Davies (both of Cardiff City) and one for Aberystwyth Academy player Ryan Edwards. The whole team played very well and coach Lee Jenkins commented that at times the football played by Ceredigion was outstanding. High praise indeed! WEEKEND GAMESAll games are ON at present, including Academy games v Haverfordwest at U12 and U14 see fixtures page Squad for U13 Ceredigion Schools v Bridgend Schools - (all Aber & District players to meet at Plascrug Leisure centre 9.30 am to make sure all players have transport). Rhys Evans, Sion Ewart, Daniel Hopton, Rhys Norrington - Davies; Matthew Jones (Swansea City), Liam Berner; Sion Evans; Jack Rimmer; Oghenetega Emeseh, Ryan Edwards; Mael Davies (Cardiff City), Dion Phillips (Cardiff City), Nial Coleridge, Tomos Toft. All games are ON at present - see fixtures page. The U14 game v Swansea Schools will now kick off at 11.00 am. Just a reminder that the Ceredigion Under 13 match will be on a 3G pitch so only moulded studs or trainers. SUNDAY GAMES RESULTSBoth the Under 12's and the Under 14's suffered 3 - 0 defeats, but despite the scorelines these are creditable results. Travel is a big factor and I'm told that both games were actually quite close and well contested. The Under 16's bucked the trend but they are much more used to travel and despite their victory it was another close game. Alex Samuel, Rhydian Davies and Ed Powl Jones were the scorers and there was a superb penalty save at the end from Conor Kenny. SUNDAY GAMESThe games are ON. The bus leaves Plascrug at 8.45 am and will travel over Plynlimon. The Under 14's and Under 16's will play at the ICI Fields, Bryniau Road, Merthyr CF48 2SR The Under 12's will play at Penydre High School, Gurnos Estate, Merthyr CF47 9BY UPDATEWe have Sunday cup games at Merthyr Tydfil. This will be the Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 age groups. A coach is arranged and will be leaving Plascrug Leisure Centre at 8.45 am. All Academy players to attend. Schools games - we have arranged an U13 Ceredigion Schools game away against Bridgend Schools on Saturday 26th November at 12.45 pm at the Archbishop McGrath Comprehensive school, Brackla CF31 2PQ. This is a 3G pitch so only astroturf trainers or moulded studs will be permitted, no metal studs. On this occasion parents will need to take players and the changing rooms will be open from 12 noon. We have also arranged a home fixture v Swansea Schools for the Under 14's on Saturday 26th November kick off 12 noon. I know how much the Under 14's look forward to this fixture!!! So, let's get it out of the way! Ceredigion Under 15's will play Bridgend Schools at Blaendolau on Sunday 27th with a 12 noon kick off. It is unlikely that the scheduled friendly games will take place against Haverfordwest SUNDAY RESULTSAndy Roberts does rather better reports than me, here is his report on the Under 12's. If parents want to e-mail me reports on games please do so and I will try and put them up. Both teams started brightly but Aberystwyth took the initiative when a through ball by Harri Horwood was seized upon by Mathew Merry who finished well with a cross shot into the bottom corner. Llanelli came back into the game and only an excellent save from Oliver Farebrother kept the lead intact. The game was evenly contested but some solid defending from Ifan Llywelyn, Tom Evans and Jo Jones kept the Llanelli attacks at bay and shortly before half time Aber doubled their lead when Dion Davies put Harri Horwood through in a 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper and he calmly chipped the keeper to send Aber in 2 – 0 at half time. The second half saw Llanelli forcing the early running although Oliver Farebrother was rarely tested, Aber then wrestled back the initiative and could easily have scored another couple of goals trough Lewis Evans and Mikey Winter-Bruce but for excellent saves from the Llanelli goalkeeper, with 5 minutes remaining it looked like Aber would see out the game and earn a well deserved victory but to their credit back came Llanelli and when a long ball was not dealt with the Llanelli striker coolly slotted the ball into the corner to set up a nervous finale. In the final minute of the match Llanelli looked like they had grabbed a draw when they equalised after a melee in the Aberystwyth penalty area but to their credit back came the Aber boys and snatched victory with virtually the last kick of the match when a miss hit shot from Matthew Merry fell kindly into the path of Mikey Winter-Bruce who smashed it into the roof of the net to give Aber a 3 – 2 victory.
The Under 12's achieved another win in the Academy Cup with a hard thought 3 - 2 victory. No details of scorers as yet The Under 14's were on fire with a 5 - 0 victory, goals from Joshua Evans (2), Liam Jaques (2) and Jake Jones An impressive hatrick from Ed Powl-Jones gave the Under 16's their victory. The Under 16's had led 2-0 but Llanelli came back to 2-2 before Ed completed his hatrick giving the Under 16's a deserved win. There was another hatrick this time in the Under 13's Ceredigion schools game against Rhondda Cynnon Taff. Dion Phiilps of Ysgol Dyffryn Teifi school, Llandysul grabbed three in the 4 - 0 win for Ceredigion and Academy player Sion Evans of Ysgol Gyfun Aberaeron completed the scoring with a cracker. SUNDAY SCHOOL + ACADEMY GAMES ARE ONI have been told by the ground staff that the games tomorrow will go ahead. SCHOOLS REPORTThere was a farce to say the least for the Under 13's who had to get off the coach in Aberaeron due to a very late cancellation by Pembrokeshire Schools. This cancellation was particularly frustrating as there had been no sudden or overnight weather event to contend with. We have let our disappointment be known to Pembrokeshire Schools. The Under 15 game was held and at one time it looked as if they would win the game comfortably as they led 1 - 3. However, they conspired to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory as they let in 3 goals to lose the tie 4 - 3. The Under 14's were overwhelmed by a physically stronger RCT side REMEMBER - THIS WEEKEND THE SCHOOLS GAMES ARE ON SUNDAY!!Under 13 Pembrokeshire Schools v Ceredigion Schools (SUNDAY)The squad I have been given is; Rhys Evans, Owain Evans, Sion Ewart, Daniel Hopton, Ellis Lewis, Rhys Norrington - Davies; Matthew Jones (Swansea City), Liam Berner; Sion Evans; Jack Rimmer; Oghenetega Emeseh, Ryan Edwards; David Newton, Nial Coleridge. The kick off in Aberdare is at 12 noon. All Under 14 players to attend. HAVERFORDWEST ACADEMY v ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMYThe Under 12's came down to earth with a hard bump as they were overwhelmed by a very good Haverfordwest team. The Under 16's did well with a good 3 - 1 win with goals from Rhydian Davies, Jake Williams and Ollie Snaith NEWS UPDATEBritish bike trials champion and Under 16 Academy player Owen Gawthorpe from New Quay has broken his ankle and is not likely to play football again until next year. We all wish him well and a speedy recovery. Under 16 Acadeny player Jamie Butler from Llanon is set to sign to Swansea City's new Academy. Jamie has impressed the Swans during his recent trial period and the word is he will sign this week. Jamie started this season very well both with the Academy and Ceredigion Schools and scored some quality goals. We wish him all the best with his new club. Under 13 Academy player Rhys Norrington-Davies spent his half term attending trials at Manchester United which will have been a great experience for him. Rhys was one of sixteen trialists of which only three were from the UK!! UNDER 14 v Haverfordwest OFFUNDER 12 + UNDER 16 v Haverfordwest ONThe pitch for the Under 14 match is waterlogged. We will be arranging a coach which will leave from Plascrug Leisure Centre and we can pick up at points on the way. More details as I get them No training in half term week - but make sure you look at this page GOOD LUCK!Young Rhys Norrington-Davies will be spending his half term in trials with Manchester United. Rhys goes there on Monday and he will be there for 4 days. Good luck from all at the Academy, do your best and enjoy yourself!! U12 Carmarthenshire Schools 3, Ceredigion Schools 6A first schools match for the Under 12's and a deserving away win for Ceredigion but credit to Carmarthen who kept going right to the final whistle. In the first half Ceredigion created chance after chance but failed to make any of them count but they kept plugging away and eventually made the breakthrough when Iolo Thomas took a quick free kick and played in Harri Horwood whose cross was headed home by Morgan Shaw. Almost immediately Ceredigion scored a second when Morgan Shaw chipped the keeper from the edge of the box, this allowed the Ceredigion boys to relax and pass the ball around and a third goal soon came when Lewis Evans smashed a shot past the keeper into the bottom corner from just outside the penalty area. The fourth goal was a brilliant piece of counter attacking football as from a Carmarthen corner Harri Horwood intercepted the ball with a fine tackle; he passed the ball to Lewis Evans whose through ball allowed Dion Davies to run through from halfway to calmly slot the ball past the keeper. The second half was more of a battle. Sloppy defending allowed Carmarthen to pull a goal back but Ceredigion soon scored again when Harri Horwood created a shooting chance through some fancy footwork and beat the keeper at his near post. Carmarthen scored another when Ceredigion failed to deal with a corner but once again Ceredigion reacted positively and scored again when Iolo Thomas beat 3 players before curling a shot into the corner of the net from the edge of the box. Unfortunately Ceredigion again let in a sloppy third goal when a couple of defenders were caught ball watching but to their credit they reacted positively and held out the Carmarthen side to run out 6-3 winners.
All players deserve a lot of credit for how they performed and some of the football was a joy to watch.
Report from Andy Roberts U13 AIRBUS ACADEMY v ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMYIt is disappointing to note that only 10 boys travelled to Airbus and although they created enough good chances to win the game they went down 2 -1. Our thanks to Airbus for hosting this friendly and to parents for taking players to the match. All the players did well but Liam Berner in midfield and Rhys Norrington- Davies at left back caught the eye. CEREDIGION SCHOOLS v CARMARTHENSHIRE SCHOOLSThis match is confirmed with an 11.30 am kick off on Sunday at the Recreation Ground, Manor Road, Ammanford SA18 3AP. Selected players should be at the Recreation ground for 10.30 am. The team will be coached by Andy Roberts. See details below. PHOTOS v CAMBRIAN & CLYDACHSee if you can spot yourself - follow this link http://s297.photobucket.com/albums/mm230/abertownfc/ACADEMY%20OCTOBER%209TH%202011/ NEXT SUNDAYCeredigion Schools U12 will play Carmarthenshire Schools at 11.30 am in Ammanford on Sunday 16th October. As soon as I know the squad I will put it up here. We will be reliant on parents to take cars for this game. Please discuss this now so you can tell me on Wednesday how we are all travelling there. U13's v AirbusWe have arranged for the Academy Under 13's squad to play Airbus at the Airfield ground Airbus Broughton on Sunday 16th October with a kick off time of 12 noon. However, it will be nescessary to travel in cars and therefore we are hoping that parents will help with transport and that players can pal up to travel together. If you can volunteer please let us know at training on Wednesday. ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMY v CAMBRIAN & CLYDACH ACADEMYUnder 12's - solid defence was the key to this first and well deserved victory for the Under 12's who are improving with each performance. Morgan Shaw opened the scoring with a well taken goal but Aber needed two very good saves from Oliver Fairbrother to keep the lead going in to half-time. The second half was very close with good performances from Ifan Llywelyn and Lewis Evans but it was Mathew Merry who sealed the victory with another well taken goal following a Harri Horwood corner. Under 14's - a much better performance from the Under 14's with an improved attitude. Despite going 0 - 2 down Aber kept battling and Liam Jaques pulled one back. Even when Cambrian went 3 - 1 ahead still Aber didn't let their heads go down and clawed another goal back again through Liam Jaques to leave the final score 2 - 3. Under 16's - the performance of the day with a fine 4 - 0 victory. There were goals for Dion Kohler, Ed Powl Jones, Alex Samuel and a very well worked goal for Rhydian Davies. Tom Price and Orlando Martin also caught the eye. CONGRATULATIONSCongratulations to Under 16 player Alex Samuel who made his debut for Aberystwyth Town first team in the Welsh Premier League against Llanelli. Alex who turned 16 in September came off the bench for the last 20 minutes and performed very well. Congratulations to former Academy Director Martyn Griffiths who is now living in Austrialia and has just had a new baby boy!! Mother (Angela) and baby doing well. CEREDIGION SCHOOLS v NEWPORT SCHOOLSBoth the U12 and U14 games are off Academy games are ON - Under 12, U14 and U16 squads to attend. Keep an eye on this site in case the weather intervenes. WEEKEND RESULTSCeredigion Schools - the Under 13's came down to earth with a bump when they went down 3 - 1 to a very good Cardiff & Vale schools team. The Under 13's were under pressure from the start but it was Ceredigion who took the lead with a goal from Tega. Cardiff had a very strong portugese midfielder who gave them control of midfield but it was two balls over the top of the Ceredigion defence that caught them out and allowed Cardiff to score twice before half time. The second half saw Cardiff still on top but unable to extend their lead until near the end to give Cardiff a 3 - 1 win. The Under 15's achieved a very creditable 1 - 1 draw. Cardiff had most of the possession but Ceredigion worked hard to keep them out and there was no score at half-time. In to the second half and the pressure from Cardiff told as they took the lead. In the final quarter of the game Ceredigion enjoyed their best period and Jamie Butler levelled the scores with a header from a free kick. Ceredigion created two further chances to steal a win but they'll be satisefied with a point. There were mixed results for the Academy at Carmarthen. The Under 12's are beginning to find their feet but suffered a narrow defeat going down 3 - 2 at Carmarthen with a brace for Harri Horwood. They were good going forward but will need to work on their defending. The Under 14's had a difficult time and went down 7 -1 to a very good Carmarthen side. The Under 16's did very well to win their game and it was two goals from the impressive Alex Samuel that gave Aber the win. WEEKEND ARRANGEMENTSU13 + U15 CEREDIGION SCHOOLS v CARDIFF & VALE SCHOOLSThe bus leaves Plascrug Leisure Centre at 8.30 am and I believe it will be travelling via Builth Wells rather than the coast road. The Under 13 squad is the same as the squad that played against Swansea Schools and coach Barry Williams will be in touch with the Under 15 players. I know it's a long trip but travel is a part of football at the higher levels and players should not shy away from these games just because of the traveling involved. The games have a 12.30 pm kick off at the University Playing Fields Llanrumney near Cardiff. The players will wear the Green shirts of the Academy kit because there is a clash with Cardiff who play in Blue and White shirts and they do not have an alternative. CARMARTHEN ACADEMY v ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMYThe U12, U14 and U16 squads travel to Carmarthen on Sunday for cup games. The bus leaves Plascrug Leisure Centre at 8.15 am and will pick up at the square Aberaeron (opposite Y Popty) en route. We have yet to be informed of the venues for the games which are due to kick off at 11.00 am. Two of the games will be at Richmond Park and the third at Trinity Fields, we believe. All squad players and trialists should attend. Regarding the Under 16's the Board of Aberystwyth Town FC has unanimously agreed that the management of players turning or who have already turned 16 is in the sole discretion of Academy Director Gari Lewis and he informs me that the players affected are to play for the U16 Academy in the cup matches and he will give me further information soon and will be talking to the players affected at Academy training sessions. WEEKEND FIXTURESWe have Ceredigion Schools fixtures at Under 13 and Under 15 away against Cardiff and Vale Schools. I have organised a bus which will leave Plascrug Leisure Centre at 8.30 am. This is because the kick offs in Cardiff are at 12.30 pm and the matches will take place at the University Playing Fields in Llanrumney. I will put up the squads as soon as I am given them. As yet Carmarthen have not confirmed the games on Sunday. I have e-mailed for confirmation but nothing as yet. WEEKEND SCHOOLS RESULTSU13 Ceredigion Schools 4, Swansea Schools 0 A stunning result for the Ceredigion U13's on Saturday. A victory against Swansea Schools is a rare event indeed and Ceredigion were fortunate to have three players who are signed to pro club academies available to play. But it was the all round team performance that so impressed coach Lee Jenkins describing the performance and the result as a credit to the team. Captain Matthew Jones (Swansea City) opened the scoring direct from a free kick and Ceredigion established a 2 - 0 lead before half time when Tomos Toft who is just beginning trials with Swansea scored for Ceredigion. The result was put beyond doubt in the second half when Mael Davis (Cardiff City) added a third again direct from a free kick. Another Cardiff City Academy player Dion Phillips rounded off a superb team performance with a fourth for Ceredigion. Full back Rhys Norrington-Davies had a busy weekend, playing for Ceredigion on Saturday and then for Birmingham City against Everton. Rhys played very well but this time he was on the wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline. Under 14 Caerphilly Schools 4, Ceredigion Schools 2 The Under 14's took time to adjust to the 3G pitch and although they had good chances to score they went in at half time 2 - 0 down. It got worse for Ceredigion when, just after half-time Caerphilly scored a very fortunate goal. Ceredigion then began to get the better of the game and pulled back two goals, the first from Ethan Kent then one from Ashley Butler. As Ceredigion went in search of the equaliser Caerphilly caught them on the counter attack and added a fourth. Coach Jonathan Evans was very pleased with the performance of the Under 14's noting that they'd had a long way to travel and had been unfamiliar with the 3G surface. Had Ceredigion taken more of the chances they created that might have come back with a point. CEREDIGION SCHOOLS - UNDER 14 v CAERPHILLYThis match takes place on Sunday and we are travelling by Bus. I will put details of squad and travel arrangements tomorrow. ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMY v AFAN LIDO ACADEMY 19.09.11In atrocious conditions at Blaendolau all of the players deserve special mention for battling on through the elements and producing some good games and good football. Under 12 - the Under 12's had their first introduction to Academy football with a tough encounter against a talented and well organised Afan Lido side. It was the visitors who opened the scoring and created one or two good chances. Aberystwyth were playing very much on the break and close to half - time Cameron Watt seized on an opportunity to level the scores. Afan Lido dominated the game after half-time and added three further goals without reply. Aber did settle the ship but couldn't make any impact on the score line. Under 13 - the Under 13's had an unexpected encounter with Afan Lido but showed good form overcoming Afan Lido 7 - 1. Jack Rimmer hit 4 and there was a brace for Tega and one for Ryan Edwards A Ryan Jenkins goal seperated the Under 14's in a very close encounter against Afan Lido and when they failed to clear a first half corner the ball fell to Ryan Jenkins on the edge of the area and he fired home. It was enough to give Aber the win as the second half remained goaless. CEREDIGION SCHOOLS U15 2, CAERPHILLY SCHOOLS 0 - 18.09.11A man of the match performance from Ollie Snaith helped Ceredigion Schools record a victory against Caerphilly. Goalless at half - time the deadlock was broken by new boy David Jones and the win secured with a 20 yeard 'screamer' from Jamie Butler. Jamie now begins a six week trial period with Swansea so we wish him all the best with that. UNDER 16 MATCH v AFAN LIDO IS OFFDue to illness of the Afan Lido Under 16 coach, this game has had to be postponed but will be rearranged hopefully in October BREAKING NEWS - UNDER 13'S GAME SUNDAYUnder 13's - Afan Lido will be bringing an Under 13 team on Sunday - we will aim to play that game in the training kits. Would the goalkeepers bring green training tops and a goalkeepr shirt. ACADEMY FIXTURESWe have now recieved Cup and Friendly fixtures from FA and I have put these up to the end of November as we are due to be playing futsal through November and December.
