Earlier in the day the Under 13's had won their semi - final against the Irish team Athlone with a good team performance and a solitary winning goal from Ollie Snaith. So to the final against a physically strong Caernarfon team whom Aber had defeated by a single goal earlier in the week. The first half was a very even affair with both sides looking to be positive and score goals. Two goals from Ed Powl Jones should have been enough to put Aber ahead by the break but Aber also gave two bad goals away keepeing the teams level at half time. In the second half Aber came out determined and totally dominated play. With ten minutes played Jamie Butler rose on the edge of the six yard box to head home an Owen Gawthorpe corner to put Aber in to the lead. Just five minutes later Harry Whalley put the result beyond doubt with a fine goal and it was just a case of seeing out the rest of the game to claim the Super Cup title. Congratulations to the Under 13's who now become next season's Under 14's squad and this win will give them great confidence in next season's Academy fixtures. Earlier in the day there was heartbreak for the Under 14's in their final against Powys Rangers. The final was close from start to finish and it was Aber who opened the scoring with a very well taken goal from Alex Samuel. Indeed, some of the football played by Aber in the first half was outstanding and Powys could not have complained if Aber had been two up at the break. In the second half the Aber challenge wilted as the exhausting semi final of the evening before took its toll. Aber were not able to mount the attacks upon the Powys defence that they had done so well in the first half and Powys were beginning to catch Aber on the break. One such break forced a corner which was fired in to the nearpost. The Aber defenders at the nearpost failed to deal with ball which fell to a Powys player who scored from close range. Within five minutes Powys took the lead and despite an immense effort from the Aber players Powys held out for their win. Nevertheless, the Under 14 group was a strong group and the Aber boys can be very proud of reaching the Super Cup final. The Under 16's won their play off against Caersws finishing the Tournament in third place. Sean Button opened the scoring for Aber with another excellent strke and a great goal from Chris Alldritt gave Aber a two goal lead. Caersws pulled one back before half time and a penalty save from Dylan Evans kept Aber ahead at the break. Caersws levelled the scores early in the second half and it took a superb chip from Hywel Evans to decide the tie and win the match for Aber. The last Aber game of the day involved the Under 12's in the Super Cup final against the impressive Personal Best from Norwich. Earlier in the day the Under 12's had overcome Athlone 83, 4 - 1 with two goals from Liam Jacques together with goals from Thomas Slinger and Ethan Kent. Personal Best were very much the favourites to take the Super Cup title but by half time thanks to a battling performance from the Aber youngsters they were only 1 - 0 down. In the second half as the rain lashed down the Aber challenge faded against the pace and technique of their opponents who went on to score four more. This was a very good tournament for the Academy reaching three Super Cup finals out of a posible four. Certainly this was a smaller tournament than in previous years due to the world wide economic problems, but the competition was tough and represented good development games for our young players. The players would have learned a lot during the week which, in the end, is far more important than cups and medals!!! Finally, this years leading scorer in the Academy was Liam Jacques of the Under 12's with 7 goals, closely followed by Ed Powl Jones of the Under 13's with 6. FRIDAY PREVIEWIMPORTANT - The Under 12's, Under 14's and Under 16's must bring a change of clothes as every player will be required to hand back their playing kits after their final games tomorrow. All matches kick off at 10.00 am. We are not sure who the Under 13's will face but their match at 10.00 am will be a semi final and we wish them the best of luck. The Under 12's play Athlone 83 and if they can secure good win they stand a great chance of being in the Super Cup final. The Under 16, have a third/fourth play off against Caersws. The Under 14's who could have done with a game much later in the day to help them recover will play Powys Rangers in the Super Cup final at 10.00 am. They are already battered and bruised so tomorrow's game is a huge ask for them. Going into the Final day, the top scorer in the Academy is still Liam Jaques with 5 goals. THURSDAY REVIEWThe Under 12's suffered their first defeat to Personal Best from Norwich. The Aber youngsters just couldn't get their game going and at one point were 0 - 3 down before Liam Jaques pulled one back. The Under 12's still have the chance of a Super Cup Final but they will need a vistory tomorrow. The Under 13's easily overcame Aber Aces 4 - 0 with two goals from Ed Powl Jones, a goal direct from afree kick for Tomos Williams and one for Harry Whalley. Congratulations to the Under 14's who have made the Super Cup Final. Earlier in the day they won their quarter fial against Inverness by 5 goals to 1. Alex Samuel had a brace and there were goals for Harry Grasham, Iestyn Morgan-Jones and Emlyn Lewis. The semi final against Leominster was a superb match; Aber should have ben ahead by at leat two goals at the break but failed to convert great chances. Leominster were very resilient ad welll organised on defence. They took the lead early in the second half with a good strike from distance which beat Jack Cope in the Aber goal. Alex Samuel then won a penalty converted by firt again Rhydian Davies. Aber took the lead through a scrambled goal by Emlyn Lewis but Leominster refused to yield and equalised 5 minutes from time. Extra time couldn't seperate the sides and by the final whistle both teams had given their all and were out on their feet. In the penalty shoot out Aber won through following two saves from Cope and winning penalty from Rhodri Thomas. In a group which no team had been able to dominate a 1 - 0 win for the Under 16's against Bargoed saw them into the Super Cup semi final, the Aber goal coming from Sean Button. In the semi final they were drawn against Hereford Utd whom they had faced on the opening day when they had drawn 3 - 3. Thanks in large part to an outstanding performance from Adam Hopley in the Aber goal the teams were still level at the end of a goaless but very entertaining and tens semi-final. Even extra time could not produce a goal and so to a penalty shoot out which Hereford won by 3 goals to two. THURSDAY PREVIEWThe Under 16 's have an early 10.00 am start against Bargod and next up its the Under 14's in a quarter final match against Inverness. Later in the day at 4.30 the Under 14's will play a semi final either in the Super Cup or in the challenge cup depending on the outcome of their quarter final. The Under 12's are next up with probably their toughest challenge against Personal Best of Norwich who have impressed with their technical ability. Finally, the Under 13's play local side Aber Aces. Please would players and parents at the Tournament make sure that playing times and pitches are checked as I am not able to be at the Tournament at all on Thursday. Going in to Thursday Liam Jaques of the Under 12's has nosed in front of the top scorers list with a total of 4 goals. WEDNESDAY REVIEWSome good results today though not for the Under 16's who snatched defeat from the jaws of victory! All seemed well as Aber established a 2 - 0 half time lead with goals from Mattie Holmes and Hywel Evans but a hugely disappointing second half performance saw them concede 4 goals without reply in the second half to lose the game 4 - 2. The Under 12's had a great win against the David Nakhid Academy scoring six without reply. There was an excellent hatrick for Liam Jaques and goals from Brandon Kent; Jordan Ainslee-Rogers and Ethan Kent. The Under 13's fared better against Maltese opposition than they did on the first day of the competition comfortably disposing of the challenge of Pieta Hotspurs. Sean Dryburgh opened the scoring and Aber added another when Jamie Butlers header from a corner was only parried by the keeper to the feet of Ollie Snaith who made no mistake from close range. A superb strike from Ed Powl-Jones in to the top corner from 25 yards put the icing on the cake. The Under 13's then played their second game of the day against a physically strong Caernarfon. Despite the tiredness, the injuries and one player suspended, the Under 13's produced an excellent team performance winning 1 - 0 with a well taken goal from Harry Whalley. The Under 14's will be disappointed with their 1 - 1 draw against Custys of Liverpool. Aber dominated the first half and opened the scoring with a goal from Jake Willams. They could easily have scored another three but just before half time Aber conceded a bad goal and ended the half 1 - 1. Despite dominating play in the second half, Aber couldn't conjure another goal to win the game. WEDNESDAY PREVIEWWednesday is always a crucial day in the Tournament and with two wins secured the going isn't getting any easier for the Under 12's. They play the David Nakhid International Football Academy from the Lebanon. They have a very professional approach and they have already won the Lake Como International Tournament in Italy. The Under 13's face another team from Malta, this time Pieta Hotspurs who are likely to be as lively as their Maltese friends of Floriana, so another tricky hurdle to over come. Later in the day they face North Walians, Caernarfon so a tough tiring day in store for the Under 13's. The Under 14's play Custys of Liverpool. They play as a junior football team in the Scotland Road league and any team from Liverpool will be tough. The Under 16's play Aber Allstars who are apparently fielding two Under 18 players. Quite why Under 18's want to play against Under 16's or why it's allowed beats me, but there we are. TUESDAY REVIEWThe Under 12’s played a technically proficient Athlone 81 side and just as against Barmouth their opponents enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the first half. Nevertheless, Aber had the best opportunity to score when Dafydd Caruthers found himself free on goal but failed to convert. He made amends in the second half when he broke away down the right and crossed for Brandon Kent to score a simple tap in that proved the difference at the end. Aber created more good chances but the Irish will be disappointed not to have taken something from the match. The Under 14’s worked very hard for their 3 – 2 victory against Borras Park Rangers, having raced into an early 2 – 0 lead. In a very evenly contested game some good interplay down the left side allowed Iolo ap Dafydd to put in a good cross met with a well placed header from Alex Samuel to open the scoring. Soon after, a free kick from Jake Williams was met on the volley by Harry Grasham and Aber were two up. Borras came back at Aber and clawed one back with a penalty, then a free kick on the edge of the area was headed home to bring the scores level. Aber’s hero was Owen Roberts Young who settled the match with a cross come shot from the right which was fumbled in to the net by the Borras Keeper. Aber introduced new goalkeeper Jack Cope who shared the game with established goalie Conor Kenny. Both were kept busy and played very well helping to secure the victory. The Under 13’s also had Irish opposition to overcome and should have been ahead at half time as a couple of golden opportunities went begging. It looked as if a goal would never come, but in the final 3 minutes Ed Powl Jones was put through and took the ball round the keeper to score. The Under 16's put local rivals Tregaron to the sword with a 10 - 3 victory. The Aber goals came from Adam Carvell (2); Jacob Billingsley (2); Jack Morris (2); Sean Button; Coner Berner; Dale Williams and Hywel Evans. Despite this victory the Under 16's will be dependant on results elsewhere to qualify for the Super Cup as the tough first day of having to play two of the stronger teams on the same day takes its toll. Going in to Wednesday, the top scorers for the Academy are; Alex Samuel (U14) 3; Dale Williams (U16) 3; Adam Carvell (U16) 3. TUESDAY PREVIEWThe Under 12's and Under 13's both face games against teams from Athlone in the Republic of Ireland whilst the Under 14's take on Borras Park Rangers from Wrexham. The Under 16's play their close neighbours Tregaron. MONDAY REVIEWThere were some good results for the Academy on day one of the Tournament. The day began with the Under 12's facing a strong Barmouth side who dominated the possession during a goalless first half. Pace up front proved the difference in the second half; Liam Jacques latched on to a through ball and was fouled in the box leading to a penalty which Jake Jones smashed home. Barmouth then equalised with a fairly fortunate ricohet but within a minute Dafydd Carruthers broke through the Barmouth back line to restore the Aber lead. Carruthers then extended the lead when he had the confidence to shoot from distance beating the Barmouth keeper. Barmouth pulled one back from the penalty spot before Aber were awarded another penalty and this time Liam Jacques scored to restore the two goal lead. There was still time for Barmouth to pull one back but a deserved win for the Under 12's and a good start. The Under 16's were at one stage 3 -1 down against Hereford Utd. Adam Carvell had the goal for Aber who felt they should have had a first half penalty which the linesman gave but not the referee. Late in the second half Aber did have a penalty when Dale Williams was brought down by the Hereford 'keeper and Sean Button scored from the spot. With minutes remaining Hywel Evans broke free on the right and chipped the keeper to his far post, Dale Williams made sure of the goal with a header on the goal line to give Aber a well deserved draw. The performance of the day came from the Under 14's up against E-Sports Dubai last season's under 14 Super Cup champions. Aber were ahead within a minute thanks to an excellent strike from Jake Williams, but this was no walk in the park as Dubai showed their quality with some excellent passing movements which had Aber on the back foot for a while. Dubai even had the ball in the Aber net only to have the goal disallowed for an infringement. However, the Aber forwards showed they had the beating of the Dubai defence and midway through the first half Alex Samuel produced an excellent finish to give Aber some breathing space going in to the second half. In the second half Alex Samuel showed his strength holding off two defenders to score his second and Aber's third. The Under 13's never really got going against a pacey Floriana side and two early bookings seemed to disrupt the Aber youngsters who were a little fortunate to reach half time without a goal against. Early in the second half Floriana did take the lead and continued to frustrate and disrupt the Aber performance. A couple of good chances were wasted and some luck was needed. It came just in time, Owen Gawthorpe broke down the left and his near post cross was spilled by the Floriana goalkeeper into his own net. The Under 13's will be hoping for better in their next match. The final game of the day pitted the Under 16's against Mid Wales rivals Caersws. It was always going to be difficult to play two games in one day and against a fresh Caersws but it was Aber who took an early lead through Dale Williams. Caersws levelled and before half time took the lead. In the second half Caersws extended their lead before Sean Button pulled one back with a cracking strike from 25 yards. A few minutes later, Jamie Owen set up Hywel Evans for a tap in to level the scores. Aber had a great chance to take the lead but missed the opportunity and in the last minute Caersws came up with a spectacular strike of their own to win the match. SUPER CUP PREVIEWIt's going to be a tough opening day for the Academy. The Under 12's face Barmouth who could be very strong. The Porthmadog Academy draws on players from this area and the Tywyn area and the Porthmadog Academy reached the finals of the Academy Cup competition with a very impressive young side. It could be that Barmouth will feature some of these players in which case it's a tough opener for the Under 12's. The Under 13's play Floriana of Malta, the nursery of the most sucessful team in Malta. In 1999 Aberystwyth Town played Floriana in the UEFA Inter toto cup and narrowly lost out. The Under 13's have the opportunity to overcome that defeat! The Under 14's play E-Sports from the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. E- Sports is Dubai's leading football academy and they are no strangers to the Welsh Super Cup; they won the Super Cup at Under 14 level in 2009! The Under 16's have two tough games; first up is professional outfit Hereford United who will be the favourites for the Under 16 title, but they can blow hot and cold having suffered some suprising defeats in previous years. Then the Under 16's will play Caersws although they are likely to draw there players from across Mid Wales. Aber will need to be quick out of the blocks to achieve success on the first day, so good luck Aber!!

ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMY U13's v INTERNATIONAL SPORTING ALLIANCE (Devon)The Under 13's enjoyed a useful warm up for the Super Cup against ISA on the Padarn FC pitch on Saturday. They have clearly made good use of their training year as they demonstarted good pace and tempo and some excellent passing and movement in their first competitive game for a long while. Tomos Williams and Ollie Snaith worked well together in midfield and Callum Ferreira looked the part in a new sweeper role. Ed Powl Jones was a handful whenever he had the ball and new boy Harry Whalley also caught the eye. ISA played their part with some good passing and control but with the travel from Exeter still in their legs Aber had the extra sharpness. A comfortable win in the end and hopefully we'll have the chance to visit ISA next year sometime. A big thankyou to Padarn for the use of their pitch. NEWS UPDATE 16th JulyUnder 13 game tomorrow (Saturday) is ON. Under 14 game on Wednesday is OFF - the American side has had a change to its itinerary which means they are no longer coming to Aberystwyth. NEW INTAKE - UNDER 12The new registration forms are not yet avalable, so I still cannot send the invitation letters out. However, I am aware that those players who attended the trial are anxious to know which players have been selected. We have selected from the trials 12 outfield players and two goalkeepers. We have saved some room for players we have still not seen, but the following players have been selected from the trials. Goalkeepers: Max Dixon; Owain Evans. Outfield Players: Jack Rimmer; Rhys Norrington - Davies; Liam Lewis; Ryan Edwards; Oghenetega Emeseh; Liam Burner; Guto Roberts; Llion Thomas; Aaron Bull; Ellis Lewis; Sion Ewart; Ryan James. We at the Academy wish to thank all the players who attended the trials. IMPORTANT UPDATE - UNDER 13'S + UNDER 14'SUnfortunately my internet access has been down so I haven't been able to update this site since 8th July but there are two important friendlies coming up. First there is a friendly for the Under 13's against a team all the way from Devon. This match will take place on Saturday 17th July at Padarn pitch which is very near to theBlaendolau pitches. Travelling to the Blaendolau entrance from Morrisons Roundabout, cross the first set of railway lines and before the main line crossing there is a turning to the Padarn playing field on your right. Next there is a friendly for the Under 14's against a team all the way from America on Wednesday 21st July, instead of training. The kick off time is 6.00 pm and if players could attend with black shorts and socks that would be a help. There will be changing facilities available. We are in discussions for friendlies before the Super Cup. Gwion Edwards - former Academy player Gwion Edwards who has just completed his first year scholarship with Swansea City looks set to be involved with the Swansea City squad in the final of the FAW Welsh Youth Cup against Wrexham at the Liberty Stadium on 22nd May. Good luck Gwion!! DOUBLE CUP FINAL BLOW FOR THE UNDER 14'sAirbus UK were too strong for Aber as they ran out 5 - 1 winners in the national Academies cup final at Latham Park on Sunday. Michael Fitzpatrick scored the Aber goal and what a goal it was too bringing the scores to 1 - 1 early in the second half, but from that point on there was only one team in it and that was Airbus who thoroughly deserved their victory. Unfortunately for Rhydian Davies he has fractured his collar bone and it comes at a very bad time for him. He had just completed very succesful trials at Birmingham and this week he had been due to fly out to Dublin having been called up to the Welsh Schoolboys squad. We hope he has a speedy recovery and maybe he'll make the Super Cup in the summer. There will be a fullreport in the Cambrian News and by following the link below you will find a whole series of photographs from Club photographer Chris Howells. Therefore all Under 13 and Under 14's should attend at Penrhyncoch first team pitch this Wednesday for a 6.30 pm start. As you come to the village do not turn right toward the shop but continue on so that you pass the garage on your right hand side. Continue on passing the pitch on your right then turning in to an estate at the end of the road then right again into the ground. TRAINING SESSION SUNDAYThere will be a training session Sunday morning for the Under 14's and Under 13's who have been selected for the Super Cup squad at Bow Street FC at 10.30 am. SHREWSBURY MATCH OFFThe match on Friday evening has been called off by Newtown FC who have a clash with a social event at the Club. Please keep revisiting this page for further information. UNDER 14's v SHREWSBURYThis match will be played at Newtown on Friday evening. All Under 14's to attend and no late pull outs please as the squad is quite small. Under 15 players Liam James and Ryan Thomas have been drafted in to cover for unavoidable absences and to keep the basic shape of the team. The kick off will be 7.00 pm. Hopefully I will have the minibus and if so we will leave Aberystwyth Town FC at 5.15 pm. Anyone needing a lift please contact me on 01970 612720. The postcode of the venue is SY16 1EN. From Llanidloes travel on the main road to Newtown. Follow Town Centre signs until you reach the first set of traffic lights. At the lights turn left then almost immediately left again on to a lane that you follow for the best part of a mile until you arrive at Newtown Football Club. FINAL OPPONENTSAberystwyth Under 14's will play Airbus UK U14's in the final of the Welsh Academies Cup on Sunday 16th May at Newtown. Kick off time to be confirmed. RHYDIAN ON STAND BYUnder 14 player Rhydian Davies is on stand by for the Welsh schoolboy squad for the tri-nations tournament in Dublin from 20 - 23 May. The tri nations tournament is part of the build up for the Victory Shield Competition and it is excellent that he has reached this stage. On Friday Rhydian begins a weekend of trials with Birmingham City and we wish him all the best. BRADSHAW STRIKES AGAIN!Shrewsbury were 2 nil down to Morecambe when former Academy player Tom Bradshaw was brought on with only 30 minutes played. He made an immediate impact creating the first goal then scoring the equaliser just after half time. Morecambe scored again to make the score 2-3 before Tom was brought down in the box for a late penalty. Unfortunately his team mate missed the penalty. Tom will know soon whether he has done enough to earn a professional contract and we all wish him the best of luck. Shrewsbury play Port Vale next and it seems likely that Tom will start and hopefully play his first full game in the Football League. UNDER 14 UPDATEThe match against Shrewsbury will not now take place next Wednesday but is likely to take place at Newtown next Friday evening. This may be better for players who might otherwise be in the middle of exams. The final will definitely be on Sunday 16th May at Newtown but the kick off time is yet to be confirmed. We will be playing the winners of Airbus UK and Gap Connah's Quay. BREAKING NEWSWe have made a provisional arrangement to play Shrewsbury Town Academy next Wednesday at Newtown (Latham Park) with a 7.00 pm kick off. This will be a tough match which will put us under a lot of pressure but more than that it will help build upon the team ethic that has helped the Under 14's reach the final. Hopefully this does not clash with any school or junior league committments but if it does please contact me immediately. Anyone wanting to travel on the mini-bus should be at Park Avenue (first team ground) by 5.00 pm. Otherwise players should aim to be at Latham Park for 6.15 pm. Keep checking back here as arrangements are yet to be confirmed. As yet there is no further news concerning the final but assoon as I have news I will put it up here. LIAM BUTTON WINS WELSH CAPFormer Academy player and Penglais School pupil Liam Button has earned an Under 18 Welsh Schoolboys Cap. Liam was in the Welsh Schoolboys Squad that faced Northern Ireland last Friday and the match was broadcast live on Sky 4. Liam came on during the second half to earn his cap. Last Monday Liam played again for the Wales Schoolboys in a friendly match against New Zealand and had the added bonus of facing up to the New Zealand 'Hacca' before the match. Since moviing on from the Academy, Liam has played for Penrhyncoch in the Cymru Alliance and has made his debut in the Welsh Premier League for Aberystwyth. Much admired by first team manager Alun Morgan, Liam has been on the fringe of the first team all season and will be hoping to make a breakthrough next season. Liam now joins Robert Evans, Richard Evans and Jonathan Evans in the elite club of former Academy players who have won Welsh Caps ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMY U14's 2 NEWPORT YMCA 0An impressive team performance from the Under 14's overcame the challenge of Newport YMCA in the semi-final of the FAW Academies Cup at Garden Village on Sunday. They had a game plan and they delivered on it scoring in each half to secure an impressive victory. Rhydian Davies scored both goals but what so impressed the travelling support was the focus and determination of all the players and their willingness to support each other all over the pitch. They have now earned themselves a place in a prestigous national final and thoroughly deserved as well. N.B. We do not yet know who Aber will face in the final as the knockout stages of the Norther half of the draw is still at the quarter final stage. Having spoken with the FAW today they believe (though it is not set in stone) that the final will be played on 16th May and a likely venue would be Newtown where they would hope to play all three age group finals on the same day. In the meantime we shall have to try and arrange one or two games for the U14's to keep them in the groove for the final. So keep calling back for information as we receive it. UNDER 14 SEMI FINALWe have now been informed that we have drawn Newport YMCA in the semi final of the Academy Cup. The match will be played at Garden Village FC, Victoria Road, Gorseinon, Swansea SA4 3AB with a kick off time of 1.00 pm. All players must be at the ground by 12 noon. I will be driving a minibus to the match which will be leaving Aberystwyth Town Football Club at Park Avenue at 9.30 am. We will probably travel first to Pont Abraham service station so we can stretch our legs and then travel to the ground. Some players will travel direct and that is welcome because it will give players on the minibus more leg room. Would those who are tavelling direct let me know by ringing me on 612720. UNDER 13's NEWSThere will be a get together for the Under 13's at Bow Street FC on Sunday 18th April from 10.30 pm to 12 noon with coach Bari Williams. Players should bring kit and boots as there will be some 20 minute games. Please spread the word around and if you are reading this please telephone Bari Williams on either 01970 820245 or 07988088060 to confirm your attendance. ABERYSTWYTH U14's SEMI-FINALWe were informed when the quarter final draw was made that semi-finals would be played on 18th April. As at Wednesday evening we have recieved no information about the semi-final draw let alone venue, date and time. I have telephoned to speak to the responsible person in the FAW but he was away on Monday and seems to have been constantly engaged in meetings since then. I am very mindful that parents need to know what is happening but at the present time I have no information at all. Please keep referring back to this page in case we get some information soon. ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMY v NEATH ACADEMYThe U12's match was highly entertaining on a lovely sunny day at Blaendolau. The game was very evenly contested throughout but Aber's greater fire power proved the difference. Two goals for Liam Jaques and one from Dafydd Carruthers gave Aber a comfortable win. The U14 quarter final was a very good game. Neath were very competitive from the start but it was very pleasing to see that Aber were prepared to work hard for their opportunities none more so than Jake Williams who battled for every ball. Harry Grasham was the first to test the Neath keeper with a long range effort but Aber had their work out in defence coping with a couple of pacey Neath forwards. Rhydian Davies broke the deadlock with a fine left foot strike from distance and Alex Samuel nearly doubled the lead but was thwarted by a good save from close range. The second half remained close but thanks to excellent performances from Emlyn Lewis and Gareth Davies at the centre of defence Conor Kenny was well protected and had few saves to make. The game was made safe 5 minutes from time when Iestyn Morgan Jones latched on to a loose ball and prodded the ball past the Neath keeper. A good all round team performance and a 2 - 0 victory which sees the U14's through to the Academy Cup semi finals. With a number of U16 players involved in the CWFA tournament the Aber Under 16's were closer to an Under 15's squad and despite playing well lost out 0-3 in a brght entertaining game. Aber handed Neath a couple of soft goals and although the score was somewhat flattering Neath fully deserved to win the game. REMEMBER THE NAME - TOM BRADSHAW!Former Aberystwyth Academy player Tom Bradshaw (17) made a dream Football League debut yesterday as a second half substitute for Shrewsbury Town in their League 2 match away at Crewe. Tom was put on with 15 minutes remaining and wasted no time announcing his arrival with a stunning shot from 25 yards that sailed into the top corner. The dream continued when 2 minutes form time Tom was in the right place at the right time to tap in for his second goal. This is what Manager Paul Simpson had to say; "His first goal is a fantastic strike and for his second he's in the right place for a real poachers goal. I'm absolutely delighted for Tom; he's worked extremely hard and has a smile on his face every day he trains with us...I always say the first goal is the hardest to get in your career but you always remember it. I'm sure that he and his family will always remember that." Tom was a highly committed member of the Aberystwyth Academy playing at every age level and then went on to play for Aberystwyth Reserves. His impressive performances for the Reserves led to then Manager Brian Coyne giving Tom his debut in the Welsh Premier and at the end of the season he played in the Welsh Cup final against Bangor City despite being only 16 years old. Shrewsbury spotted the talent and signed him up as a second year scholar. His next target will be to earn a professional contract and we all wish him well in that. Well done Tom. INTERNATIONAL CALL UPFormer Academy player Jonathan Evans (17) who is presently a first year scholar at Accrington Stanley has been selected for the Wales Under 19 squad to face Northern Ireland. Here's hoping that he will earn another Welsh Cap to go with those he earned at Under 16 schoolboy level. Good luck Jonathan! NEWPORT YMCA ACADEMY U12 v ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMY U12 - ACADEMY CUP QUARTER FINALA very long journey for the young Under 12's ended n defeat at Newport. Reports suggest that Newport have a very good young side and the time spent in cars before the game would not have assisted the Aber cause. Newport were four goals up before Tomos Slinger pulled one back for Aber. The final result was 5 - 1 to Newport who now progress to the semi - final. Nevertheless, reaching the Quarter Finals cps a good first season in the Academy for the Under 12's. U12 QUARTER FINAL ACADEMY CUP - NEWPORT YMCA ACADEMY v ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMYThis match is confirmed for Friday 9th April at Newport YMCA with a kick off time of 1.00 pm which means that we would like players to be at the ground for 12.15 at the latest and as this could easily be the best part of a three hour journey, those travelling will need to leave at around 9.15/9.30 am on Friday morning. The match will be played at the the Newport YMCA first team ground at Mendalgief Road, Newport and the post code is NP20 2HF. Tomorrow evening (Wednesday) I will be ringing round to check travel details and to try and find lifts for those boys who need lifts. Thanks to all those parents who are travelling. U14'S LOSE OUT IN SUPER CUP FINALA brace from Rhydian Davies and one from Iolo ap Dafydd put the Academy comfortably in to the Super Cup final where they faced the challenge of Shrewsbury Town Academy. The first half was very even with the Academy creating a couple of good chances but neither side managing to score. Unfortunately, soon after the restart and with the wind behind them Shrewsbury scored an early goal. Aber went in search of an equalizer but conceded another goal late in the second half to lose the final 0 - 2. Neverheless, a commendable effort by the U14's and useful preparation for their quarter final encounter with Neath next Sunday. Many thanks to coach Richard Lucas who stepped in to take the U14's at short notice. EASTER SUPER CUPAberystwyth Academy Under 14's performed very well on the first day of the Easter Super Cup. Their first game against Pwllheli ended in a 0 - 0 draw although the Academy had the best chances to score. Next up were Olney and thanks to a Rhydian Davies hattrick and a Harry Grasham goal, the Academy won, 4 - 0. Finally, the Academy played Woodlawn winning 1 - 0 thanks to a Jake Williams header. Aberystwyth Acdemy U14's have won their group and will now play the second placed team in Group 2 in the semi-final of the Cup competition. GENERAL UPDATE - 24.03.10ACADEMY CUPThe great news is that both the Under 14's as group winners and the Under 12's as best runners up have qualfied for the quarter finals of the Academy Cup competition. The Under 14's have been drawn at home and will play Neath at Blaendolau on 11th April. The Under 12's have been drawn away against Newport YMCA and at present it looks as though this game will also be played on 11 th April. We will be contacting the Under 12 players to see how we can travel. If we can travel in cars that would be more comfortable than a mini bus. EASTER SUPER CUPWe decided not to enter the Easter Super Cup to enable junior clubs to enter but we have recieved a request from the organisers to put in an Under 14 team to even up numbers after one side that was due to play dropped out. Having spoken with all the players in the Under 14 squad we have decided to help out and enter an Under 14 side. We have also allowed a team of combined junior league players to play as Aber Academy at Under 13 to overcome one player one club problems. This team only has some of the Academy squad and has not been selected or organised by the Academy coaches. NO GAME THIS SUNDAYPontardawe have called the games off. Please keep looking at this site for information as we are likely to have games scheduled shortly. The next confirmed fixtures are against Neath at home on Sunday 11th April. UPDATE - 125th ANNIVERSARY PHOTOThere is to be a special photograph taken to mark the 125th Anniversary of Aberystwyth Town FC. On Friday this week at the first team ground at Park Avenue a photograph will be taken of the first team, reserves, youth, academy, ladies and seagulls, all together. Therefore we would be grateful if all academy players would attend Park Avenue this Friday at 6.00 pm in your academy training kit to be part of this special photograph Training has ended for the term but games continue. Keep your eye on this site for news of forthcoming games. ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMY v MERTHYR TYDFILUNDER 12'sThe U12s were slow out of the blocks and found themselves 2 nil down after 20mins. After missing a penalty Aber fought back well and scored through Iwan Davies. Only a last minute goal from Merthyr sealed victory. UNDER 14'sAn improved second harf display after being 2 nil down at half time produced another victory for the U14's. A hattrick from Rhydian Davies, one a superb volley from the edge of the area, and goals from Iestyn Morgan Jones and Iolo Ap Dafydd completed an excellent second half performance.
UNDER 16'sQuality of goals was the order of the day for the U16s. A contender for 'Goal of the Season' from Matty with a unstoppable left foot volley from the edge of the area set up Aber for a half time lead. Sean Button beat two men on the edge of the area before unleashing a great strike in the top corner and Jamie Owen completed the victory with another great volley giving the goalkeeper no chance.
UPDATEBlaendolau have called the games off this morning. As this is the second time the home cup matches against Haverfordwest have been called off. We may well have to go there to play these games. UPDATEBlaendolau will say whether the games are on or off at 9.00 am tomorrow. I will put a message up if the games are off. ABERYSTWYTH v HAVERFORDWEST - Sunday 28th FebruaryAll under 12's, Under 14's and Under 16's to attend Blaendolau this Sunday for 11.15 am. We have a 12 noon kick off and we need "all hands on deck" for our final round of cup games. LLANELLI v ABERYSTWYTHThe trip to Llanelli for our penultimate round of cup games was fruitful for our Under 12 and Under 14 sides, but not so for the Under 16's who were thrashed 1 - 7. The Under 16's conceeded two soft early goals but looked as though they had put themselves back in the game with a well taken goal from Sean Button just before half time. But hope turned to despair as Aber were overwhelmed in the second half conceeding a further five goals to end their hopes of qualifying for the quarter finals. The Under 12's raced into a 0 - 3 lead with goals from Osian (2) and Jordan Ainslee Rogers and should have scored more before Llanelli stopped the rot and frustrated Aber holding them to a 0 - 3 final score. That win puts Aber on 10 points in the cup competition with 5 games played. Haverfordwest have 10 points with 4 games played and a much better goal difference having recently beaten Llanelli 12 - 1. Haverfordwest still have to play Carmarthen away and we play Haverfordwest in a must win match next Sunday. The Under 14's cruised to an 8 - 0 win over Llanelli with hatricks from Stephen Williams and Rhydian Davies backed up with goals from Mike Fitzpatrick and Jake Williams. With a 100% record to date and only one cup game left against Haverfordwest the Under 14's look sure to qualify for the quarter finals. LLANELLI v ABERYSTWYTH - SUNDAYThe games are on, the coach is booked. We leave Plascrug at 10.45 am. Kick off is 1.30 pm. These are cup games so we need everyone available. If we can win these games we have a real chance of qualifying for the knock out stages. If you are travelling direct see below DIRECTIONS TO PENYGAER PLAYING FIELDS AT LLANELLI 1. Come off at Junction 48 M4 and head towards Llanelli 2. At the 3rd Roundabout turn right. 3. Keep going until you reach a T Junction. At this junction turn left. 4. We will be playing cup games at Llanelli on Sunday. Kick off will be a little later than usual at 1.30 pm. The coach will leave Plascrug Leisure Centre at 10.45 am with pick up points at Abereaeron 11.15 ish and Synod Inn 11.30 ish. All under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 players to attend. I will put travel details up during the week for those travelling directly. Please try to make sure you are available. Let me know asap if you are not. Let me know if you are travelling direct. Super Cup - as you may be aware there is an Easter Super Cup this year but Aberystwyth Academy will not be entering so that players can play for their local clubs. However, the Academy will be entering teams at Under 12, Under 13, Under 14 and Under 16 in the Summer Super Cup. Each year we repeat the same rule that Academy players are expected to play for the Academy in the Super Cup or otherwise forfeit their place in the Academy. We allow no exceptions to this rule. Because we have had a shorter spring term this year we are likely to have an extended training period. Subscriptions - we would be grateful if players would kindly ensure that subscriptions are paid as soon as possible please. SUNDAY MATCHES OFFRemarkably, despite the glorious weather the University have called off the matches on Sunday against Haverfordwest. We have queried this with the ground staff at Blaendolau and their view is that the piches were damaged last weekend with all the football that was played and they need more time to recover. Therefore all games apart from American Football have been called off. SHREWSBURY TOWN 0 ACCRINGTON STANLEY 1Shrewsbury Town lost to Accrington Stanley in League two on Saturday 30th January, but what is our interest in that game? Well, 16 year old former Academy player Jonathan Evans is a first year scholar/apprentice at Accrington Stanley and 17 year old former Academy player Tom Bradshaw is a second year scholar at Shrewsbury. In fact, Tom was in the first team squad for the match as a substitute. Although he did not get an opportunity to play in the match Tom would have loved being with the first team squad and we hope to see him make a League appearance soon. UPDATE - ACADEMY + SCHOOLSNext Sunday (7th February) we will be playing our home cup games against Haverfordwest and looking at the position overall it is vital we do well at all age groups in these games so please make sure you're available and fresh to play. All Under 12's, Under 14's and Under 16's to attend by 11.15 for the matches which will kick off 12 noon at Blaendolau. We have rearranged our home matches against Merthyr Tydfil for 7th March. The training sessions this term will be significantly less because we lost two sessions to the weather and on 20th March the University begins work on the track around the astroturf which will close the astroturf until 21st April. Accordingly we will be training on Wednesday 17th February, during half term and the last training session of the Spring term will be on 10th March 2010. Because we still have a number of games to play and pay for the Spring term invoice will be reduced to £25.00 1996 Schools. There is a very high possibility that the 1996 Schools squad will have a game against Rhondda Cynon Taff at home on Friday 19th February 2010, during half term with a kick off of 1.00 pm. We must confirm this fixture by Thursday this week so would all 1996 players be ready to tell Barry Williams at training on Wednesday whether they will be available. I f you are not able to attend training on Wednesday make sure you contact Barry to let him know on 07988088060 ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMY v PORT TALBOT ACADEMYA beautiful blue sky made for a great day of football at Blaendolau on Saturday. The Under 12's put in a very good performance winning 6 - 1. The star of the show was young Liam Jaques with a hatrick, other scorers included Thomas Slinger and Iwan Davies. A rare outing for the Under 13's saw them record an impressive 6 - 0 win with Ed Powl Jones leading the way with the scoring. There were also goals for Ollie Snaith and Jamie Butler. The Under 14's didn't have it all their own way but played some impressive football in achieving their 4 - 2 win. There were two goals for Harry Grasham and a goal each for Rhydian Davies and Iestyn Morgan-Jones. The Under 16's were involved in a very close and competitive encounter and took the lead with a goal from Sean Button. Port Talbot equalised in the second half and although Aber could have nicked it at the end, a draw was a fair result. Credit to all the players Aber and Port Talbot who played the games in an excellent spirit. SUNDAY GAMES ARE OFFThere has been quite a bit of snow in North East Wales and more is forecast so the games have been called off by Elements Cefn Druids, but really there was no choice. Beaten once again by the weather!! IMPORTANT UPDATE - GAMES TOMORROW ALL ON - CHANGE TO SUNDAY GAMES - SEE SUNDAY GAMES BELOWOne slight concern is hat the quarter final match at Park Avenue kicks off at 2.00 pm not 2.30 as we and Port Talbot had presumed so we have to get the games done efficiently and get players who wish to go to the match over there as soon as we can SUNDAY GAMES NOW AT BOW STREET FCThe Under 13 's game will kick off around 11.30 am at Bow Street FC near the Rhydypennau School. Under 13 players to attend by 10.45 am. Under 15 players must attend by 11.45 am and thier game will kick off straight away after the Under 13 game IMPORTANT UPDATE - SATURDAY and SUNDAY GAMESABERYSTWYTH ACADEMY v PORT TALBOT ACADEMY - SUNDAYThese games will be played at the University Playing fields Blaendolau on Saturday and we would be grateful if players could attend for 10.45 am. The games are at Under 12, Under 13, Under 14, and Under 16. We will be mixing in with the junior league programme so come with a good co-operative spirit to make sure we can get our games on without causing too much disruption. All the Port Talbot players will be going to the big match at Park Avenue after the games. Aberystwyth first team is playing Port Talbot in the quarter final of the Welsh Cup and it promises to be a great occasion. The club would like as many Academy players to attend the match as possible and I will have free passes (players only) for the game with me to hand out. We'll try and get the results of our games announced before kick off. ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMY v ELEMENTS CEFN DRUIDS - SUNDAYThese games are Under 13 and Under 15 and the kick off will be 12 noon. Would players be at Blaendolau for 11.15 am please. All Under 13 players to attend. The Under 15 squad is; Dylan Evans; Erwan Izri; Adam Carvell; Conner Berner; Jacob Billingsley; Ryan Thomas; Hywel Evans; Chris Alldritt; Jamie Owen; Owen Drew; Iestyn Evans; Gareth Davies; Alex Samuel; Michael Fitzpatrick; Rhydian Davies and Jake Williams. 1995 CEREDIGION SCHOOLS 0 v SWANSEA SCHOOLS 3This was a closer encounter than the scoreline suggests with the scores being level at half time, but as Ceredigion tired Swansea scored three late goals. Special mention is due for the performances of Gareth Davies, who had an outstanding game, and Rhydian Davies who had both played a match for Penweddig school during the afternoon. The commitment shown by these to players was very much appreciated . Congratulations to Rhydian Davies who has been selected to play in a regional squad game in February as part of the selection process for the Welsh Victory Shield squad and we all wish him well. 1996 SWANSEA SCHOOLS 2 v CEREDIGION SCHOOLS 1Another impressive display from the 1996 squad this time in Swanseas' own backyard. There was no score in the first half which was very even with few shots on goal. The game opened up in the second half and Ceredigion took the lead when Ed Powl Jones was put through and rounded the Swansea Keeper to score. However Swansea replied with two goals late on to win the game. UNDER 16 ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMY 2 v CARMARTHEN ACADEMY 1A much improved display from the Under 16's who gained some revenge for their 5 - 1 defeat in Carmarthen last year. A goal in each half from Dale Williams gave Aber a much needed boost and their first win in the cup competition. UNDER 12 ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMY 2 v CARMARTHEN ACADEMY 2Aberystwyth twice held the lead in this entertaning cup match but in the end the honours were shared. Dafydd Carruthers opened the scoring after the Carmarthen 'keeper parried a Liam Jaques corner into his path and it was a lead Aber kept until half time. Soon after the restart Carmarthen equalised and could have gone ahead but for hitting the Aber bar and a fine fingertip save from Ryan Lewis which kept the scores level. Aber were reliant on breakaways and Ethan Kent was producing some nice through balls for the Aber forwards and one such breakaway saw Liam Jaques in the clear and he made no mistake with a fine left foot strike. It seemed as though Aber would hold out but minutes before the end Carmarthen brought the scores level with a fierce strike that gave the Aber 'keeper no chance. UNDER 12 + UNDER 16 v CARMARTHEN ONThe Under 14's can stay in bed as Carmarthen Academy have pulled their Under 14 team out of the Academy cup competition. HALF TERM REPORTUNDER 12The Under 12's in their first season in the Academy and their irst experience of inter Academy games have performed very well. They presently lie second in their regional cup group and thied in the South League. They will hope to maintain form in the cup and qualify for the knock out stages (see tables below based on results reported to the Principality Welsh Premier League web-site).
UNDER 13No scheduled Academy games for the Under 13's but they have trained well and the 1996 players have performed vey well in the Ceredigion Schools Squad. The 1997 layers have not fared so well and they will be looking to improve duringb the course of the season. UNDER 14Due to an error on the Welsh Premier web-site it is not possible to access the results of other Academies, but the Under 14's have had a very impressive start to the season and appear to be in the driving seat in the Cup group table with a record of 3 playes and 3 won yielding a maximum 9 points. In the League their record is played 3, won 2, lost 1 and therefore six points. The Under 14's will be looking to ensure that they qualify to the knockout stages of the cup competition. Aber dominated the second half and Dafydd Carruthers added a second to his first half goal to reduce the arrears. As Aber went after the equaliser Haverfordwest broke away to score making the final score 4 -2. The Under 14's maintained their 100 per cent record with a 3 - 6 win. The Aber goals came from Rhydian Davies (2), Alex Samuel (2), Stephen Williams and Iolo ap Dafydd, and the Under 16's steadied their ship with a well deserved 2 - 2 away draw with goals from Adam Carvell and a penalty from Sean Button. NO TRAINING DURING HALF TERM - NEXT TRAINING WED 4TH NOVEMBERACADEMY & SCHOOLS GAMES - SUNDAY 1ST NOVEMBER 2009Because of the 1997 Ceredigion Schools game on Sunday the Under 12 Academy team will be a mix and match team of players born in 1998 and some of the younger 1996 players. CARMARTHEN ACADEMY v ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMY (CUP MATCHES)Having suprisingly lost their home league encounter, the Academy Under 12's produced a fine cup performance to avenge that defeat putting 4 goals past Carmarthen. Dafydd Carruthers with an outstanding perfomance scored three of the Aber goals and Iwan Davies had the other goal. By contrast the Academy Under 14's were below par and when Rhydian Davies had to leave the field with a bad cut Aber really had their work cut out. Having been 0 - 2 ahead, Carmarthen came back to 2 - 2, but driven on by a fine performance from Jake Williams, Aber scored two late goals to secure the win. Rhydian Davies had opened the scoring, there was an own goal, and the other goals came from Alex Samuel and Iolo ap Dafydd. The Under 16's will be very disappointed with their performance in Carmarthen conceeding 5 goals in a 5 - 1 defeat. CEREDIGION (1996) v SWANSEA SCHOOLS (1996)Swansea Schools are always very strong and the 1996 squad can be very proud of their efforts on Saturday at Pontrhydfendigaid. Swansea opened the scoring but Ceredigion equalised soon after through Ed-Powl Jones. Unfortunately for Ceredigion they conceeded two further goals before half time to go in to the break 1 - 3 down. Matthew Lucas with a second half penalty brought the scores to 2 - 3 but as Ceredigion went in search of an equaliser they conceeded again to leave the final score 2 - 4. WEEKEND SCHOOLS and ACADEMY FOOTBALLThe only schools game on this weekend is the 1996 game at Bont on Saturday morning - see below. The 1997 schools game v Bridgend will now take place on Sunday 1st November. Further details nearer the time. SWANSEA SCHOOLS v CEREDIGION SCHOOLS (1995)The 1995 Ceredigion Schools squad went down 0 - 4 at the Gnoll this evening. Swansea started strongly and were 3 - 0 up at half time, but in the second half Ceredigion came more in to the game and created a number of very good chances. Ceredigion will have home advantage in the next encounter which promises to be a close game. CEREDIGION SCHOOLS v SWANSEA SCHOOLS (1996)The squad to face Swansea at Pontrhydfendigaid on Saturday is; Conor Kenny; Matthew Lucas; Rhodri James; Stephen Williams; Emlyn Lewis; Iolo Ap Dafydd; Rhodri Thomas; Ed Powl-Jones; Jamie Butler; Callum Ferreira; Ollie Snaith; Tomos Williams; Sean Dryburgh The kick off time is 11.00 am and players must report by 10.15 am. ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMY v LLANELLI ACADEMYThe Under 12's were again involved in an exciting match with the lead changing, but Aber eventually won 4 - 3. The Under 14's having led 5 - 0 eased up and eventually won 5 - 3. The Aber scoring included a hattrick from Alex Samuel. The minibus will also pick up at Aberaeron Square bus stop and Synod Inn if anyone wants to be picked up en route. ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMY v CARMARTHEN ACADEMYThe Under 12's suffered a suprise defeat to Carmarthen losing 2 - 3 after taking a two goal lead. Liam Jaques opened the scoring with a fine left foot drive and when Dafydd Carruthers doubled the lead with an excellent individual goal Aber looked well in control. Carmarthen responded well with a goal just before the end of the first period and brought the scores level in the second period. A number of good chances came Aber's way but none were taken and in the final period Carmarthen took the lead and held on for the win. The Under 14's were far too strong for Carmarthen and again they racked up 9 goals including 4 for Rhydian Davies and 3 for Alex Samuel. Jake Williams and Iestyn Morgan - Jones grabbed the other Aber goals. The Under 16's will be disappointed with their performance particularly during the first half when they found themselves three goals down. Erwan (Eggy) Izri grabbed a consolidation goal for Aber. The next time we play Carmarthen will be away in the cup so now we have had a look at them we know we are in for some tough games. LLANELLI ACADEMY v ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMY (League)A first away trip for the Under 12's and a solid win with Dafydd Carruthers scoring the winning goal in a 2-1 victory. No details of the other scorer as yet. Our Under 13's squad played the Under 14 match and were narrowly defeated 2 - 1. Oliver Snaith headed home the Aber goal. The Under 16's will be disappointed to have suffered a 0 - 2 reverse. BRIDGEND SCHOOLS, 0 v CEREDIGION SCHOOLS, 6A superb team performance and a stunning 6 - 0 victory for Ceredigion Schools away at Bridgend. The football played by Ceredigion in the first half was outstanding and brought four goals. First a right foot shot then a left foot shot from Stephen Williams put Ceredigion two goals up. Ed Powl-Jones then added another two goals, the second a header in off the bar following an excellent cross from Rhodri Thomas. The game became more of a scrappy affair in the second half but Ceredigion maintained their control and Ed Powl-Jones completed his hattrick with Jamie Butler rounding off the scoring with a fine chest trap and volley. There was still time for Conor Kenny who had not been troubled throughout the match to make an excellent point blank save in the dying minutes to ensure Ceredigion returned with a clean sheet BUS TO LLANELLI - PICK UP POINTSThe bus leaves Plascrug at 10.00 am, 10.15 at latest. ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMY v LLANELLI ACADEMYA great day for football and success for Aber in the first series of cup matches against Llanelli. The Under 12's had their first outing and after going a goal down they rallied and played some good passing football. Jake Jones brought the scores level and then a fine individual goal from Liam Jaques gave Aber the lead. The match continued to be closely fought and Aber had to work hard to keep their lead. Tomos Slinger then sealed the win with another fine goal. The Under 14's had a much easier time of it and were physically superior to their Llanelli counterparts who were more of an Under 13 than an Under 14 side. As expected they were completely overwhelmed by the Aber side who romped home with a 9 - 0 win. There were hatricks for Rhydian Davies and Stephen Williams and Alex Samuel, Jake Williams and Iolo ap Dafydd chipped in with a goal each. The new look under 16's fought out a goalless draw with Llanelli although the Reds probably enjoyed more of the game in terms of possession. Chris Alldritt produced a very good performance in the centre of defence and Sean Button and Samba Ndong also showed up well. CEREDIGION SCHOOLS v SWANSEA SCHOOLS (1997)This match was always going to be tough coming so early in the season and being the first time the Ceredigion players had played together. They also came up against a very talented Swansea Schools side that controlled the match from the outset and had strength and pace throughout their team. Goalkeeper Ieuan Newman was called in to action early on with two fine saves but it was inevitable that Swansea would score and when Ceredigion failed to clear a corner Swansea took full advantage to take the lead. The Ceredigion back four of Matthew Shaw; Calvin Pugh, Huw Williams and Gwion Evans battled well but on a big pitch Swansea were able to find gaps and get behind the defence time and again and by half time they were 5 - 0 ahead. Ceredigion saw more of the ball in the second half and Liam Jaques began to cause Swansea some problems and very nearly reduced the arrears with a solo effort that just sneaked the wrong side of the post. Then Ethan Kent broke away and his strike brought a good save from the Swansea Keeper. Dafydd Carruthers and Sion Pugh worked hard in midfield but were quickly closed down whenever they had the ball and there was very little opportunity for Osian Thomas and Glyn Williams up front with their team under so much pressure throughout. As the second half wore on Ceredigion tired and conceded more goals despite more fine saves from Newman. ABERYSTWYTH ACADEMY v LLANELLI ACADEMY (SUN 20TH SEPTEMBER - 12 noon kick off)These cup games are at Blaendolau this Sunday. Selected players must attend by 11.15 am. ABERYSTWYTH AADEMY v BALA ACADEMY - GAMES OFFThese matches are now off. Unfortunately, there are to many boys and coaches away from both Acadmies. Thanks to all those players who made themselves available. NEW SEASON DAWNSWe have now recieved the Academy and Schools fixtures for next season and I have put them all on the fixtures page. We start with a friendly against Bala at Home on 23rd August. The Under 12, 14 and 16 fixtures are Academy fixtures. Under 12 means Year 7 from September 2009, Under 14 means Year 9 and Under 16 is a combination of Year 10 and Year 11. There are no Academy fixtures for Year 8 (Under 13) but players will be involved in schools games for Ceredigion Schools and friendlies. Indeed Swansea Development Centre have already confirmed that they will be playing us at Under 13 level. Schools games are not played on a School Year basis but on a Year of Birth basis so there are games for players born in 1997, 1996, 1995 and 1994. So, first work out if you have Academy games, then consider the year you were born to work out if you are likely to be involved in Schools games. For those involved in Academy and Schools games this is the strongest fixture list I've seen and from a development point of view it could not be better. However, without kits we cannot play any of these games so please return outstanding kit immediately either to Martyn or to myself or come to the football club this Sunday morning (see below) For schools games, selected players must make their own way to the venue. Schools football takes precedence over Junior League football. We will be selecting schools squads in each age group so that players know in advance that they are likely to be selected and can inform their junior league clubs. This coming season, the Academy will train in 4 school year groups as follows; Year 7 (Under 12) - 6.30 pm - 8.00 pm; Year 8 (Under 13) - 6.30 pm - 8.00 pm Year 9 (Under 14) - 8.00 pm - 9.30 pm; Years 10 + 11 (Under 16) - 8.00 pm - 9.30 pm We have never before trained a schools squads but I am hoping that we can give some consideration to this. It will depend upon a venue to train which will need to be free. I am particularly keen that this should take place with the 1997 Schools squad. We will be unable to retain all the Year 8 players in the Academy, but we will watch their progress in schools games. We have difficult decisions to make in all age groups but the younger the player is the more difficult the decision. In previous years we have not had a means of maintaining contact with young players released although players have certainly come back in to the Academy where they have progressed sufficiently with their junior club. By absorbing schools fixtures in to the Calender we will be able to monitor progress. RETURN OF KITI will be at Aberystwyth Town Football Club (first team ground) tomorrow (Sunday 9th August) between 10.00 am and 11.00 am so that any kit still with players can be returned to me. If anyone is unable to attend because of travelling distance I would be grateful if the players parents could contact me to say how and when the kit will be returned.
